I'd be tic'd if I was Huston..but As a Cub fan I'm completely thrilled for the Big Z, he really did need the rest...Last start it looked like he was over-throwing and trying to prove himself after the lay-off..Selig is imo a Bad commish but who cares as long as my Cubbies are rolling. They owed last night and a couple more to the spoiler Astro's...who whipped the Cubs last series at Wrigley.

I was thinking of this the other day, how many pitchers who go the distance (no no or not), seem to have issues afterwards (arm, shoulder) or just don't have much success the next season?
One that comes to mind is Anibal Sanchez of the Marlins.

I think it has a lot to do with the next season. I can see the result of my D'Backs this season. During July and August our big three, were going 8 innings or more almost every start due to the fact that our hitters and bull pen couldn't do anything. This month, they have had bad starts, high ERA's getting pulled early. They have less velocity and movement and they are having a heck of a time with their control. I would think after a full season of it they would really be hurting.

Does anybody have any info when Billy Martin managed the A's? Those starters had insane innings.

Check out Rick Langford's numbers from those "Billy Ball" A's years, they were insane.

But so were Nolan Ryan's, and it's not like he was letting up out there to go deep into games.

Ryan should sell blood transfusions or something. He'd make more money that way than he made his entire MLB career!

Zambrano hadn't reached 100 pitches until the 9th. Total 110. Not out of the ordinary.

Congrats to Zambrano who pitched a brilliant game and to Ted Lilly who took a no no into the 7th I believe. Two great games when they matter.

Not sure how Selig stuck it to the Astros since he doesn't hit for them. Of course maybe he could have picked up a swinging bunt at some point.

Maybe the problems with pitchers are we have allowed them to not challenge their physical endurances to get more when needed. Think back in the day when pitchers were forced / had / expected to go deep into the game - were there fewer injuries or did we just not hear of it or did the players just suck it up?

I have always been a huge supporter of your body can do whatever if you build up to it. But if you don't work up to it then you can't expect to do it.

As the Astro's were supposed to be at home he may have chosen a more neutral site than the next closest park to Wrigley outside of Comensky...I think Atlanta was in NY this weekend for just one example..not that I'm complaining (I am a Cub fan and a w is a w)...Are you saying that you don't think that home field in baseball is an advantage? Or that the Cubs being in a place where there fans had such an easy ride to support them wasn't an advantage?

JD long time Cub fan here as well. Been following them since Leon Durham played first, Ryne Sandberg played second, Shawon Dunston was an up and comer at short and the Hawk patrolled right field with a howitzer and arthritic knees.

Personally I don't think the "homefield" fans actually does that much in the regular season. I can see it during the post season when everything is on the line.

Besides the Cubs always have a fair number of fans wherever they go. I was in Cincinatti several years ago when they were going through a not so good stretch and I would say it was almost half filled with Cubs supporters. Sosa hit a pretty big homerun and I honestly felt like the crowd was pro Cub from the noise.

I do agree that it was a weird choice of location but overall I just don't think it really matters in the long run. But (like a lot of times) I could be wrong since I never played at that level.
