I just graduated at semester from highschool. I had Tommy John surgery in Oct of 02 and did not throw the spring of 03 which would have been my senior year. Would I be considerd eligible for this years draft? I've been approached by local scouts as a possible free agent? What's the rule on this?

Well you will be eligible. The surgery itself has nothing to do with being drafted if that is what you are asking. You are a free agent already, being that you have no contract with any team yet. The only thing i'm not positive about is the fact if you have to graduate or not. I don't believe there is a rule where you have to have a diploma to be drafted in the US.. I'm sure someone else has a more solid answer.

I have graduated from high school and have not committed to a college. Could a pro team not draft me to save a pick but just sign me right now away from the draft as a free agent? I
know that if you haven't graduated high school yet they have to wait for the draft to sign you. I guess they're thinking I'm pretty much like a 23 year old who's trying to make it and isn't in school. They would be allowed to sign him at anytime of year. I'm in a very unique situation.

Have you got a college situation in hand?--That shoudl come first--the draft will follow

I would advise you not to put the cart before the horse

BBScout,

Thanks! I wasn't sure on the rule but I figured I had to wait for June to be able to get drafted.

Trhit,

I'm going to go to college unless I get an offer I can't turn down, but I doubt I would. I'm going to get an education and then see if baseball works out!

Glad to see you are looking at it in the right perspective

Have you applied for admission to colleges--it is getting late

since you graduate from hs, you are a free agent, if you were still in hs you would have to go through the draft

Dibble,

Where did you get that info? BBScout says I would have to wait for June. I've never heard of anyone in the same situation as myself.

Trhit,

I'm going to a JC. Applying isn't that big of a deal at a JC.

you have graduated from HS. Landon Powell a few years ago, took the GED so he was eligible for the draft, was not drafted and was declared a free agent. Scott Boras tried to pull a fast one, Powell ended up at South Carolina and is now currently a college senior. Boras and Powell have parted since then

First of all, attend a JUCO, you have NO LEVERAGE and any MLB scout will sign you for NOTHING. By attending a JUCO you can show MLB scouts you are healthy and they can see you pitch against college hitters.

are you in college now?

Tallman, Call 212-931-7800. That is the number of the Commissioner's office. They will give you the information that you want.
