Some good points made, but I don't completely agree with the example of Alex White (UNC).

170 pitches in a 7 day span is not abnormal. He started a game (not sure what the pitch count was) and then after 5 days rest threw 2 innings in relief and followed with 2 innings the next day. Again not sure of the pitch counts. The only debate is whether he should have pitched the last 2 innings the day after the first 2 innings, but that in itself is done a lot without being considered abusive.

I just think there are many much better examples if we are talking about arm abuse.

What determines pitcher abuse? Alex White threw 12 innings over 7 days with a pitch count of 170, another pitcher threw 9 innings in one game with 153 pitch count.

As PG stated the only question with White was throwing again the next day after throwing two innings and that isn't considered abuse. To state that Wilson might need surgery is irresponsible reporting. White also pitched around 100 innings this season, not unusual for a top college pitcher.

There is also personal responsibility that should be taken by players, let's not blame it all on the coaches. Even with a heavy workload in college, pitchers often finish their season and head off to play summer ball. That often becomes a contributing factor for college pitcher injuries.

My son was managed well as a pitcher in college. Any abuse that I did see did not occur with larger programs, but smaller programs often throwing their top pitcher in a weekend series then in an important mid week game. Good example, Alex Wilson from Winthrop (who required TJS but has since left that program). But overall in three years, good pitcher management seemed to be the norm.

I wish writers would check facts, and do a little more homework before reporting as if they are the final authority on subjects. This guy wants to use the UNC staff as an example, then singles out Alex White. Here are the dates, innings pitched, and number of pitches thrown for Carolina's pitchers during the CWS:

--Alex White's role shifted to that of relief pitcher after 4 days rest which I think sheds a different light on his total pitch count. I also think that UNC has very good Boyd's World rank. You might also want to know that I am a life long UNC fan and alum, so maybe my view is skewed. I also have a son who is a pitcher, and I see nothing in those stats that shake me up.
