Sportsdad - No - it was not. Another hint: Born in St.Louis, Missouri

Last set of hints: Considered by some to be the greatest left handed hitter that ever lived. Once hit a ball so hard that the friction - and subsequent heat - created by the ball moving so fast through the atmosphere - actually caused the ball to melt on its way back down to earth. When finally located - the ball resembled a small partially melted marshmellow. Prior to his back injury - most experts predicted that this player would hit over 2000 career home runs during his career - and with a little luck - perhaps 3000.
