Baseball teams have been firing players since a few months after they began hiring them over 100 years ago. They are not at all shy about letting them know they do not either play well enough, cheap enough or generate enough income (sell enough tickets), to keep around. Bernie is a fan favorite and a popular teammate.

Mo Rivera happens to be in his contract year so he's putting the team on notice he needs to be paid market to stay. Hence, his comments. Very out of character comments by Rivera, though.

Dan Topping was supposed to have ended the mystique about 80 years ago.

It didn't happen.

Coach Merc

See the David Wright interview in the papers today--Mets fans are headed to the World Series--they need worry about the Yankees

Mariano needs to come on over to Metsy Land - the Shangra-La - in Flushing NY.

It is heaven Mariano.

Come on over.

I would love to see Mariano leave the Yankees and go to the Mets. It would single-handedly raise the winning percentage of every other team in the American League.

I question what Mariano has left in the tank--he was not the same pitcher last season and the Yankees used him sparingly in September due to a "tired" arm

He may be angling for one more big payday

TR,
I like David Wright and the interview. As you quoted above "Mets fans are headed to the World Series". Problem there is, they've been headed there plenty of time since 61' but only 3 times to watch their team. It's unfortunate that these Met's fans head to the World Series every fall and more times then not it's only to root against the Yankees... duel

All in fun....don't we just love this game... I know "Itsinthegame" is a huge Mets fan but he had to move out of NY to root for the Mets in hiding (NC)... How's "D" doing?

By the way, Mariano's restaurant is doing well here in New Rochelle...

The EVIL EMPIRE thrives on controversy. This will have zero impact on the on-field product, I am sorry to say. pull_hair

Coach Merc - LOL

Yes - I did have to move - I was surrounded by Yankee fans and finally had to run for my life.

As you know - when you move or are traded to the Mets - you become young again. It will help Mariano.

Are there exceptions? - yes - but rare.
In the history of the Mets - only 3 players who moved to them actually immediately aged by 50 years.

Burnitz - Alomar and Vaughn. The Horror - The Horror!

All is well - D is ready to go. Wish Joe the best for me - I will be following all of his games!

Best regards - Paul

TR - I'm not nearly as old nor wise as you but I do know they have had many flaws over the years yet things work out eventually. The 80's were NOT fun as a Yankees fan but they've gotten back on track. Maybe Mo was miffed about how Bernie was treated by the Yanks. Whoopty woo. He oughta be more concerned about blowing saves against the Sawx. And I'm a huge fan of #51.....even saw him play for the A/C Yanks way back when. But his ability to contribute is almost non-existant.

Sorry TR but there aren't ANY stats for catchable balls hit to CF that he couldn't run down. If they kept him as a DH or played him at 1B against lefties or something, I could handle that.

Sorry but the only time he was in CF was when Damon was hurt---otherwise he was a DH

TR - I should've said "OF" since he played all 3 positions.
