Can someone set me up with a link to the area in the NCAA booklets that discusses the transfer rules from one Div. 1 program to another Div. 1 program. Do one have to ask the coach to be released? And if you ask for a release and get it do you have to sit out the next year at the Div. 1 school you transfer to. What happens if you ask to be red shirted this season and decide to transfer next year to another Div. 1 school. I have alot of questions ----I hope you out there can help me understand.

You can transfer from one Division I program to another without sitting out. However, certain conferences have rules that require an athlete to sit out if they transfer within the conference. Football, hockey and basketball transfers must sit out. You need a release to speak to another coach, however an intermediary can talk to another coach on a player's behalf, but most coaches will still ask if a release has been granted. Contact the NCAA membership services at 317-917-6222. They can provide you with specifics.

You can also download the NCAA "Transfer Guide" from the ncaa.org website. It gives examples of transfer scenarios. Call the number in the previous post.
