My son is 12 years old and he is a switch hitter, however he judges what side of the plate he'll bat from on the basis of if the pitcher pitches low or high rather than if he throws lefty or righty.
He feels that as a righty hitter he can be more productive against a pitcher who throws up in the zone and as a lefty batter he has more success gainst one who throws low in the zone.

I'm not sure whether to go on letting him use that logic to decide what side of the plate to bat from or go on the basis of whether the pitcher is a southpaw or not.

I'd be willing to bet that this question resolves itself in a couple more years when your son starts seeing more curve balls. At 12 there aren't going to be many kids that throw curves (not good ones anyway), and it doesn't make a bit of difference one way or the other.

I doubt that theory can work for such a long time. After w few years, he'll advance to higher levels and they'll know to keep it up or down. He should work on hitting all the picthes, righty and lefty.

Baseball, it is said, is only a game. True.

catseyepub, let your son do what he wants at this age. As stylemismatch said curveballs will take care of his wanting to hit from right side.
My son switchhit from tee ball on, it was alot of work and it did not really start to pay off till high school when he started seeing large percentage of breaking balls. Then the benefits are immense.
A kid smoking liners from both sides of the plate is impressive, be it in tryouts, games, whatever.

AS stated above, the curveball will set him straight Smile

Is he a natural lefty or righty?

My son experimented with switch hitting, but he is a natural lefty and would get so few chances to bat righty that he gave it up last year. That and the fact that he ownes lefty pitching Wink

Whats up guys Iam new here and I have to say it was a blessing finding you all(parents with Baseball kids). My boy is 12 and he's a switch hitting catcher with talents from both sides of the plate. Anyway here are his travelball stats
(batting righty)

25/63 .397
4HR
20run
OBP .441
SLG .661
11k

You dont have to guest I'll tell you most of those K's came from curveballs. So now Iam working on my own curveball(for BP with my boy).

Iam thinking I should swith him around and start fighting against those curveballs with a power lefty bat. What do you think guys!!!!

cats, get him doing it properly now. No reason to wait. Get more reps in the way he will ultimately be doing it. There is absolutely no reason to put this off.

green, you say he is switch hitting. So why isn't he already doing it? I must be missing something here.
