Pitched batting practice to son last night. Can't throw from 60' with any accuracy or velocity. So, moved the L screen in to 40'.

Thought I was behind it... guess not. Line shot up the middle. I had time to turn, caught me square in the rib cage. It isn't a bruise, no it is a pulsating hematoma the size of a small grapefruit...

I am laying on the ground wondering if my rib is busted. Son asks if I am ok. Yeah sure, give me a minute or ten. Then he says, I guess this means we are done hitting for the night?

Can parents change the BESR ratings?

I need to change my screen name... maybe OOSM... One Old Slow Mother...

And he's a 6 year old tee ball player, right!

Hope you rubbed some dirt on it and kept throwing... teach by example!

I hear ya Mom. I need to change my name to "needs two L screens" to throw to my son and his team. I once got hit right on the elbow at the cages. There was a screen with a 2 foot by 3 foot hole in it and I was behind an L screen. They still got me.

Just do what I do, blame the supersonic bats with the crazy pop. There is no way that we are slowing down that much.

I too use the L-screen at about 40 feet to replicate relative game reaction time with a slower pitch speed and I had the same happen to me this weekend.
Threw a pitch from about 40 feet and 11 yr old hit a liner right back at me. I was lucky it hit me in the hand. Didn't want to discourage the hitter so had to act like it was no big deal, but it hurt for quite a while.
In this case, he was using his carbon/alum bat, but I typically have him use wood when we are in the cages. Don't know if wood has a slower exit speed, but sure seems like a get a split second more time to get out of the way when he uses wood.

You are quite the Mom.... first knots on the shins now line drives to the ribs.....

Bet you won't get hit again.....

BTW always check them for holes, weak netting...

I have never wished for snow... but, I am thinking that if it gets a little colder then he can go play baseball inside...

He hit the first bucket with wood and then switched over to his composite. I swear I thought the hit came through the L screen.

Dropped his travel coach with a whiffle ball south of the border...

Hey kbat - I'm another mom that throws batting practice. Dad's working to fund this dream, so someone has to throw the BP.

Baseball Mom I know what you mean. I have a knot on my elbow where SouthPaw hit me 2 weeks ago - and it still hurts. I am obviously not as agile as I used to be because I did not get behind the screen fast enough. SouthPaw did hit his dad in the hand last week when he thought he was far enough behind the screen.

Oh well, I wouldn't trade it for anything.

There are plenty of moms (soem even post here) who have thrown BP to their sons while dad was out bringing home the bacon, or perhaps there was no dad around.

For some reason dads think moms don't do that stuff.

Feeling old...my youngest hit 23 today, not THAT is feeling old.

I stopped throwing BP last year (that is Dad's job now) but I still have to catch a pen now and then. Talk about funny. Chubby, old mom donned in full gear trying to catch her 80mph son. My hand is black and blue after each time. Boy am I glad he is in HS now and will have a full time catcher!!

Us Baseball Moms do lots of stuff for our kids that most "normal" moms wouldn't dream of doing.

Loving every minute of it and wouldn't change a thing! It's a medal of honor to have a bruise on your cheek with the outline of a baseball stitch you got playing catch with your son, been there, done that, have the T-Shirt.

I'm proud of you moms!!!! You couldn't pay my wife enough to throw BP or play catch. Besides, she was a cheerleader and throws like a ...well..umm...she doesn't have very good form! She IS a southpaw though.

Yeah blame the bats.I got a few lumps on the shins from last nights BP as well.

When I take my son to the park to take BP,I have him hit with wood.When he hits at team practice,he hits with his composite/aluminum bat.I think there's a big difference between the two.Maybe it's just me justifying the cost of the game bat... .

To all the moms working out with your sons/daughters,you got my respect.Keep it up!!

I am feeling your pain... the summer my son was 11 and my husband was gone for military duty I decided to take him to the ballpark and catch a few pitches...

Well, he was struggling a bit and getting frustrated, and then throwing harder..well, his four seam FB went right where it should, but I wasn't ready. I took it right to my face- under my eye and to the left of my nose. I went down, then drove myself to the doc.

The doc said I was lucky- any higher and maybe a broken orbital bone and to the right -a broken nose. People were staring at me like I was a battered woman- it's a good thing my husband was out of the country!

Just know that your son will always remember you practicing with him. Get well soon!

ROTFL. DH does the BP at our house (ex-pitcher) but I was shagging balls in the outfield for dad and son when my 11 y.o. lined one at me and caught me off guard. I had stitch marks on my thigh and I was soooo excited I had that medal of honor. Proof I was out there with the boys! I thought I was the only one nuts enough to think that was too cool....

I just added to my long list of bruises/stitches/injuries last eve catching a bullpen for BOFJr. Of course I did not want to drag all the catching gear with me which is OK when he is hitting his spots….and there is good lighting. Working FB’s up and in and he throws a hard one down and away……..well I go flying to get out of the way to protect my manhood……..with my bare hand. Fortunately it is my left hand and I can still lift a cold one…..plus I get out of some yard work this week-end. One of the coaches was driving out of the parking lot and saw the event and called me last night laughing. I think I am going to start getting a catcher for him…..

If you are floating around BUM just curious what velocity you stopped catching BUM Jr or at least went to full gear?

You ladies are braver than I am! When my son was first learning to pitch, his father would catch for him, and he'd make me stand at the plate with a bat in my hand -- but I wasn't allowed to swing, because god forbid a foul ball hit him in the face! I think it did it two or three times, but then his hard fast ball and lousy control chased me away for good...

I'm another BP-throwing baseball mom. 2Bdad tried, but his control is worse than mine! I haven't had a bruise in a while, but I sure do hear the balls whizzing by. Those sore muscles sure do feel good.

When 2B was about 7 or 8 and playing on a fall rec team, one of his teammates had never learned to throw. 2B asked, "why didn't his mom teach him?" It never occurred to him that most kids dads do that.

Yep, learned my lesson last year too. Was standing there after throwing a pitch to watch the boy's swing and a line drive caught the lower cross bar of the "L" screen, deflected upward knocking my baseball hat off. Now I throw over the high part of the "L" screen and I can now stand there and watch the swing without worries. Also found out I'm more consistent throwing better pitches with a nice angle to the plate from being forced to throw over the top, can't 3/4 it anymore when getting tired. Give it a try next time throwing BP. (I also throw from about 40 feet)

Threw Bp to my son well into college....until I had to move the L screen in to about 40 feet to get up the velocity that he needed...

After 18 years of Bp, my arm is shot....when I throw accurately, the velocity is (as described by my son) is Pus....
