Scenario
My son began playing on a 13U travel team when we moved here to FL in Feb. The team had 3 quality coaches and quality players with varying skills but all decent. They started out well and then went on a skid losing about 5 in a row. I didn't get involved in practice but watched and talked socially with the head coach about things but never in depth, more friendly conversation. Over the last weekend one of the coaches was going to be away so the head coach asked me to come and coach third, he wanted to have a new face and give the kids a new look as they were scuffling. I said sure and spent the morning going over all the signs with my son. In the end the team swept a DH 5-4 and 7-5 and everyone seemed pretty happy parents and players alike. So the head coach asked me to come on as part of the staff full time. We get to practice last night and one of the other coaches quit and took his kid with him. (his kid was one of the top 3 players) My baseball style was not the same as his (I'm aggressive hit and run bunt etc) he's a little bit more laid back (Earl Weaver 3 run homer style.) Our styles shouldn't matter since we take our cues from the head coach. They team and the staff have been together a long time and my intent was to help not hurt. Part of me wants to say I'm too busy to take on this role and go back to business as usual but I also think, the team played two great games and won by "get him on, get him over, get him in." Maybe I'm seeking advice and maybe I'm just thinking out loud in cyberspace, weird.
