After all these years of spending every waking moment involved in baseball ...what am I going to do now?! YES! I'M FREE AT LAST!!! I have turned my son over to BETTER coaching and now I can have a life again! Smile

Don't get me wrong, I have relished every minute, but it's time for me to check out (as a coach anyway). My son is 13 and made the HS program as a 7th grader. In fact, every boy on my travel team made their respective HS programs this year! How cool is that? I'm so excited for these boys and have watched them all play since they were T-ballers at 6 years old.

My son gave me his schedule after practice last night and I am looking forward to attending his games ...as a spectator!

It is bitter-sweet, but more sweet than bitter. To be honest I believe that my son was ready to move on as well. He likes his new coaches and is excited to be playing where he will attend HS. It's what he has been working toward for a very long time and he is very happy ...and so am I. Smile

Congrades Callaway,

That's what its all about
Some people dont understand the time and effort it takes to be a travellball Dad/Mom but I feel your victory.

Good Job Daddy-O

"To all Coaches" You can only play daddy ball for so long!!!
Before real talent puts your kid where he should have been in the first place...............ON THE BENCH.

Sounds great for you and the boys.

I have a question. What does it mean that the boys made the high school program in 7th grade? Around here you can't even tryout for the high school team until 9th grade and even then you don't attend the high school until 10th grade. Is what you are talking about a preparation program or actually part of the school teams or what? In our school district there are no Jr. High teams either.

I have not really checked into it, but I was told that in Ohio you can only play 4 yrs total in high school. So if you were to start in the 7th and play every yr following that, you would have to sit out your jr and sr years. Maybe other states are different but the coach at our school said it wouldn't make any sense to move up an 8th grader because he'd have to sit out his sr yr.
Congrats Callaway! Back to coaching in summer ball?

In SC a kid can tryout for JV/Varsity of the HS they are zoned for in 7th grade. I can't think of any 7th graders that ever made varsity, but I know of a couple 8th graders that played varsity ball, just not many. I did coach a boy last fall that made the HS Varsity Golf team as a 7th grader though.

Some high schools have JV/Varsity and "C" teams. Usually the 7th and 8th graders that make the HS programs play exclusively on the "C" teams. However the "C" team practices with the JV/Varsity. Some of the boys that are good enough from 7th and 8th grade will see some time with the JV as well. Other high schools only have JV/Varsity but carry expanded rosters to include a select few 7th and 8th graders.

The boys that I coached made both types of programs. Four of my boys made their HS JV teams and the rest attend schools with "C" teams. They all made their teams though. Smile We played up all fall in 14U & 15U and that gave the boys a lot of experience on the big fields and playing against older boys. I was a little apprehensive at first but it was the right call. They adjusted quickly and that gave them a lot of confidence at tryouts. Plus, I involved the HS coaches as much as possible last fall, letting them know when and where we were going to play. ...and they came! Smile

My son is zoned for a HS that has a "C" team with a strong baseball program and a great coaching staff. Their "C" team will play other HS in the area with "C" teams as well as Private School JV teams. They also have a JV Tournament on the schedule.

Nope. Down here, once you make the HS program they own you. They have a very involved summer program and schedule.

Rob,

Say "Hey!" to Chico and the gang from Boomer and me!! Smile

Callaway - thanks for the elaboration there. Since I live by Innocent Bystander, I didn't get it either. I was inquiring in another thread about a guy who's son is in 7th grade and he was trying out for the HS team. I was flabbergasted. I still find it hard to believe that in places like San Diego and down in your neck of the woods (loaded with baseball talent) they'd bring 7th and 8th graders into the mix of the HS programs.

Sounds like fun, I've got family about 50 miles from you. (Cross Hill) Might have to move down to your area so we can get outside and work on baseball. Got any use for a feisty 7th grade Rhp? Smile

Callaway I think you are going to have more fun now. At least for me the summer is a blast. Its alot more fun to just go to the park and watch your son play. Its impossible to watch your son play when your the coach. At least for me it is. I enjoy the summer when I can just be a fan and go and watch all the boys and my son. Good luck to your boy and his team.

Coach May,

I'm already enjoying the free time! I haven't even been to one of his practices to watch. He is in great hands. The school's program has produced a number of professional ball players and the academics are outstanding. I remember watching Brad Woodall play and thinking that someday my son might be playing for this HS. It's pretty cool.

Good luck if you try! Roll Eyes
I thought I'd stay and watch a Saturday morning basketball practice at school (7th grade) this year. My son came strolling by and without looking AT me said through clenched teeth, "dad, WHAT ARE you doing? GO HOME!!"
Seriously!! It was still 5 minutes before practice started. EekA few other dads were there and the coach said we were welcome to watch.
Well, I've learned to PICK my battles and I was pretty sure that wasn't one of them so I left! Big Grin

Wow. I've never heard of anything like that. In Missouri it's against the rules to participate in a high school activity if you aren't "in" high school. The only exception I believe is a "club sport", one that is not supported monetarily by the high school.

Congrats to Boomer, Ross! And have fun w/ your extra time. Smile

My son still has his 12YO LL and AAU season left before the jump to big field. I too hope that he plays for some good baseball people so that I can step back too. We shall see.

Good luck and enjoy.
