Yesterday in our 13u game our boys made an unusual double play. Double plays are gravy for our team anyway. Big Grin

Runner on 2nd, 1 out. Runner goes with the pitch. Batter hits a hard line drive just past the pitcher's outstretched glove. Center fielder charges and gets ball on 1 bounce and throws runner out at first. 1b relays ball to home just in time for a bang-bang tag. Both throws were perfect. It was fun to watch and a real momentum boost for the boys.

Sure beats those times when they cause you to moan and groan "what are you guys doing?"

The center fielder threw the batter out at first base? That's not unusual; that's astounding! Eek

Total lack of hustle on the part of the batter. Simply no way that should happen.

Not true, Pop. Remember this was a 13u game. 13's often play on a big field but outfielders often play very shallow. We used to see 9-3 plays with some regularity and on the right kind of ball an 8-3 is not much more than a 4-3 up the middle.

It's also not unusual at that age to have big kids who haven't yet developed foot speed. Some kids still need to "grow into their feet" at that age. So cut 'em some slack.

Obviously great execution on the play, and, as MidloDad says, perhaps not that unusual, but what was clearly required was either two basecloggers running or some very, very slow reactions to the play. It would not have happened against a good team or a team playing heads up baseball.
