Hello. I'm new to this forum and would like to ask for advise. My son tried out for, but did not make his high school team. I thought he was good enough, but obviously was lacking somewhere. He made it through all 5 days of tryouts and was the final cut. He is a pitcher, an infielder, an out fielder, and even a catcher. He tried out for everything except catcher and 1st base. Did he try out for too much or should he have gone out for catcher as well? Next question, how often do kids make the JV team their sophmore year if they didn't make the freshman team? Should he even try again next year?

My advice is to not give up. Find a good summer travel program where your son will get playing time and let him become a better player.

I would absolutely try out for the high school team next fall. In fact, I'd try and see if your son will be able to play with the summer high school JV team in addition to travel ball this summer.

Finally, I'd have your SON talk to the coaches and ask when he needs to improve on to make the JV team next season.

Good Luck

I've known some kids who were cut from their "large" high school team who were good enough to start at a smaller one. Often it's just a numbers game.

I believe numbers had a lot to do with it. Just our luck he is in a grade that had the largest turn out for try outs, ever, plus there were 6 boys who had a parent that was either a baseball coach or football coach for the school. We knew it was going to be tough going in.

I have a high school player in Georgia also and know how brutal these try-outs can be. Especially if politics were involved....Hang in there mom...it's probably almost as tough on you as it is him! You'll both feel better if you have a plan.

I agree with some of the other posters and would like to add:

Have your son talk with the high school coaches and ask what he needs to improve on. Remind him to be specific during the conversation...maybe ask if he tried out for too many positions and what they think he should focus on..Then really work on it. Maybe professional lessons if it's form or speed and agility training if it's speed.

See if you can get him in a spring rec. leaque. Our area has a 15-18 league and some players who don't make the high school team do this instead.

Play summer ball. Make sure it's on a team with good instructional coaching and that he'll get to play.

Play fall ball with the high school team. I think some of the players who made our spring team, did so because the coaches (while not coaching fall ball-just watching) saw them in live game situations and working hard.

Work out in the winter. Hit the weight room and run. Start preparing for February tryouts at least a month before....

Finally, sorry I'm being long winded here, encourage him try out again next year...I know several players who have made their JV baseball teams after not making the freshman team.

And if he makes it after all that hard work...what a great lesson in perseverence!

Good Luck!

Thank you for the advice. One question, I'm dumb here, would high school fall ball be the same as the high school summer league? I wish I'd found this web site before try outs. I'm a hokey from a no where town in W. Virginia and had no idea what all went on and needed to be done when trying out for a high school team. It's been a lesson learned for me too.

Dizzy, you'll be fine. Smile

I think every school is different. Our school doesn't even have a freshman team. Just JV and Varsity and we're one of the "big" schools that could definately field a freshman only team.

Some schools keep their sping teams together and play in the summer. Ours doesn't, so my son plays on a travel team when high school ball is over. Our school does field a walk-on fall team that can provide some exposure for kids..

I think everyone is just suggesting he keep playing as much baseball as possible and those are some options.

Find out from other parents...or have your son ask his friends about summer travel teams in your area. Most have postings to websites about their tryouts...

Thank you. He was actually recruited quite heavily by several travel teams in our area as soon as it was learned he was cut. We have chosen one that we feel will be the best fit for him.

When we lived in Ga. I found that nearly all kids made the school summer team, it's a good place to get a chance to show the coach what you've got.

I noticed on our high school team that a number of players who did not make the high school team as a freshman, made it as a sophomore. We have about 14 sophomores and 9 freshmen. So don't give up hope. I expect that they prefer to load up a bit more on sophomores who are a year more developed (physically and baseball-wise). Use your next year wisely as the posters above have all suggested and best of luck!!!

Diz,

If you are in the Atlanta area, Windward Baseball Academy runs a great high school camp beginning the Monday after Christmas break. My son is only in 7th grade, but I was there with the freshmen and saw drastic improvement in that 5 week span. (2.5 hour sessions two days per week) The players get a minimum of 150 swings per night. Throw 25-30 pitches each night. Instruction given by a former major leaguer/now minor league pitching instructor, 3 current minor league players, 1 major league scout, 2 full time WBA instructors and at least 1 H. S. coach. Best money we ever spent, son is hitting .529 with a slugging % over 1,000.

Hey GoldGlove. Wonder if I saw you there. I was getting pitching lessons on Wed nights with my 8th grader during the camp. You're right, looks like a good camp. A lot of good instructors including Howie McCann, Brian's dad. Good luck to you.
