I believe numbers had a lot to do with it. Just our luck he is in a grade that had the largest turn out for try outs, ever, plus there were 6 boys who had a parent that was either a baseball coach or football coach for the school. We knew it was going to be tough going in. quote: Originally posted by obrady: I've known some kids who were cut from their "large" high school team who were good enough to start at a smaller one. Often it's just a numbers game.

Thank you for the advice. One question, I'm dumb here, would high school fall ball be the same as the high school summer league? I wish I'd found this web site before try outs. I'm a hokey from a no where town in W. Virginia and had no idea what all went on and needed to be done when trying out for a high school team. It's been a lesson learned for me too. quote: Originally posted by baseballmom03: I have a high school player in Georgia also and know how brutal these try-outs can be. Especially if politics were involved....Hang in there mom...it's probably almost as tough on you as it is him! You'll both feel better if you have a plan.
I agree with some of the other posters and would like to add:
Have your son talk with the high school coaches and ask what he needs to improve on. Remind him to be specific during the conversation...maybe ask if he tried out for too many positions and what they think he should focus on..Then really work on it. Maybe professional lessons if it's form or speed and agility training if it's speed.
See if you can get him in a spring rec. leaque. Our area has a 15-18 league and some players who don't make the high school team do this instead.
Play summer ball. Make sure it's on a team with good instructional coaching and that he'll get to play.
Play fall ball with the high school team. I think some of the players who made our spring team, did so because the coaches (while not coaching fall ball-just watching) saw them in live game situations and working hard.
Work out in the winter. Hit the weight room and run. Start preparing for February tryouts at least a month before....
Finally, sorry I'm being long winded here, encourage him try out again next year...I know several players who have made their JV baseball teams after not making the freshman team. And if he makes it after all that hard work...what a great lesson in perseverence!
Good Luck!

Dizzy, you'll be fine. I think every school is different. Our school doesn't even have a freshman team. Just JV and Varsity and we're one of the "big" schools that could definately field a freshman only team. Some schools keep their sping teams together and play in the summer. Ours doesn't, so my son plays on a travel team when high school ball is over. Our school does field a walk-on fall team that can provide some exposure for kids.. I think everyone is just suggesting he keep playing as much baseball as possible and those are some options. Find out from other parents...or have your son ask his friends about summer travel teams in your area. Most have postings to websites about their tryouts...

Thank you. He was actually recruited quite heavily by several travel teams in our area as soon as it was learned he was cut. We have chosen one that we feel will be the best fit for him. quote: Originally posted by baseballmom03: Dizzy, you'll be fine. I think every school is different.
