Can somebody help me understand this rating system?

My son just returned from a Georgia Dugout Showcase and was given a rating sheet and to look at it seems quite depressing. He said that the evaluators said that the seemingly low numbers do not necessarily mean something bad (the ratings are vs. an average major-leaguer).

For example:

Fast Ball 82 mph rating of 20, life 35, control 35

This is a rising junior and most feedback I get is that, except for his size, he looks real good.

Can somebody translate the ratings for me?

The real question is.....was he selected in the TOP 100?

If so, don;t worry about his scores.

If not, I'd be concerned about his abilities.

Give me a break. I haven't been on this site long and I can't believe someone didn't challenge this response earlier. One of the leading hitters in Cobb County as a sophomore from Walton didn't make the 100 team. Not my son, I just know of him.

These ratings may be accurate but use them as a baseline to from your son can start. Mark Buehrle wasn't given a chance to pitch in high school. Curt Schilling didn't pitch until his senior year. I'm sure if they had been rated at 15 their scores might have been right in line, or lower than your son's.

If your son loves the game have him keep playing till he can't find a team or till he wants to stop. Don't let a rating and exclusion from an arbitrarily selected team discourage him.

I would not even worry about the "Top 100". It was the top 100 of who showed up. There were some good ball players out there, don't get me wrong. However there were alot of players that did not go because of their summer schedule. We didn't even go this year and we have already been to the campus for a serious meeting with a D-1 coach. And have another in the wings. Tell him to study hard and make his academics as imortant as his fast ball.
