Looking ahead, who are the best rising HS catchers in Georgia? Let's include not just the 5A. Opinions, please, because I have seen some very good catchers on GISA, single A & AA teams.

Egan from Augusta and Askew from East Coweta. Both played for the EC Astros this past season.
Eric Holmes from Cobb County is a home schooler that has great upside at that position, 6'6'' and a 5 tool player. Hit a ball out of field #2 at East Cobb in the 2nd row of the parking lot as a 14 yr. old.

Egan is an 05 (?), Torre Langley (06). What is Askew? All three play on the same team? Of the three, which is the better?

Holmes an 8th grader? Is he playing at EC?

Egan, Askew and Holmes are all '05s. Egan is from the Augusta area and do not remember his HS. Askew is at East Coweta. Holmes is home schooled and will probably play for an East Cobb Team this year.

Another one to watch is Bo Hansen '05 from Heritage HS. Strong hitter with some serious power. Stands about6-4. Strong arm. Needs to work on skills behind the plate a bit.

When I get comments from people about catchers, their hitting seems to dominate the discussion. Not to dimenish the offensive aspect (hitting at every position is important), I like to watch a good defensive catcher and one who TAKES CHARGE of the defense - talks to the infield, positions the outfield, controls the tempo of the game and manages his pitcher. If a catcher has a great bat, but has troubles with catching fundamentals or is not a team leader, then he needs to be somewhere else on the field. He is not there to just catch pitches and occasionally throw out a runner. Many a coach only communicate thru their catcher and when they are both on the same page its a fun to watch. And a SMART catcher is even better.

Brad Ausmus (Houston Astros) has won two Gold Gloves behind the plate and maybe bats .230, but Andy Pettite would not even open discussions with them until they extended Ausmus' contract.

So let me restate my question: Who are the best 05/06 catchers in Georgia? I've seen a few and they're not all at EC or in 5A, but I'd like to hear from you folks in Georgia of who you really like.

Lead Foot,

I totally agree with your comments. The catcher is involved in every play of the game. He is or should be the field general. My comment is on a kid who has all the tools but will need a little maturity to become complete. If he learns the strike zone at the plate, he will be awesome. Defensive skills are already there. He is not extroverted so his field command will need some work also. I would also like to hear where some of the better ones are located.

From what I have seen he has a good chance, his defensive skills should serve him well. Light on the bat. It will not be easy for anyone to catch that Roswell staff.

Joel Wall, an '06, from Northgate High School in Newnan is quite good. He and Petitti were both evaluated at the Perfect Game Underclassman Showcase. Their evaluations are both posted now. Joel is an 8.5 and Daniel a 7.5.

I am a bit predujiced toward Joel as he is my step son.
