This is not baseball but in Tennessee where Pat Summitt reigns supreme I have to wonder what is wrong---not because I am a Geno/UCONN fan but her interview wherein she stated she could not get thru to her players and they had no intensity and Geno intimated the same thing a week or so ago up here---Bob Knight and Coach K are saying the same thing--are the helicopter parents kids taking over the prison---I never though I would hear Coach Summitt say something like that and then to get knocked out in the first round---OUCH !

Tom,
It is a sign of the times.

It is the same in baseball and most other sports...its called the "ME GENERATION" for a reason. You don't find many "team players" anymore who play the game for the love of it and with some grit in their game. And its our own fault for making them that way! A book could be written about why players play to/for themselves and parent's excuse them from any wrong doings, but suffice to say is that they are what we have molded the into within a culture of no responsibilty for personal actions and "my baby does no wrong".

As long as they recruit me players they will have me players on the roster and have to deal with the problems they bring to the table. A lot of these kids are told from day one how great they are. Its always about them. They spend way too much time focusing on what THEY need to do to get where THEY want to get. Instead of playing the game and learning the game as a team sport they are internally focused on taking care of THEIR business. It should not surprise them to find that the same kid they recruited is the kid they now have in their program.

Bob Knight did what he did because he recruited kids that played the game in a team concept and wanted to do it that way. They bought into what he was selling because that was the way they were brought up playing the game. The reason Bob stopped winning was because those types of players became harder and harder for him to find. He was not going to change. The players changed. Its sad.

For what its worth...we in higher education see the EXACT same things in the classroom. I just went to a weekend conference where the whole theme was "Reaching the Millennial Student."
