to request that an umpire ask for help from his partner on a close call.

For instance, say there was a close play at the plate, plate umpire calls runner safe but it was pretty clear that catcher tagged runner's foot before runner touched the plate. Would a coach be over-stepping to tell the plate ump that it appeared he had a bad angle to see the tag from, and would he be so kind as to confer with his partner?

Yes. That call is that umpire's call, good or bad. Now if the ball comes loose and the calling ump doesn't see it then by all means he should go for help.

I agree with Mike. If something happened that the umpire didn't see (pulled foot, swipe tag, dropped ball) you can ask him to get help. If it is a simple judgment call, like whether a runner was under a tag or the ball beat him to the base, it's final.

Every call would be subject to this re-assessment, an untenable situation. good
