Overheard a dad describing this situation to a friend.

Runner on 3rd, pitcher standing on rubber. Runner breaks for the plate. Pitcher steps off rubber and throws home to get the runner. Batter thought it was a pitch and bunted it -- successfully ... or so he thought.

Batter got to first safely and the run scored.

Ump called batter interference for not getting out of the way of the play at the plate -- batter out and runner has to go back.

Correct call?

The batter is indeed guilty of interference on this play.
If there were two outs when this occurred the batter is out and the runner can't score. If there were less than two outs the runner is out, other runners return to original bases and the batter remains at bat.

The key to the ruling here is the pitcher stepping off of the rubber. When that occurs, the pitcher is no longer throwing a pitch but he is making a play at the plate. The bater must recognize this and not interfere by bunting the ball, hitting the ball or even putting his bat in the way of the catcher. It can be a totally different ruling if the pitcher does NOT step off the rubber.

Just a point of clarification.
