During a recent game our catcher dropped a 3rd strike and threw the ball at the player running to first and hit him in the helmet, knocking him down, he ran in foul territory. Then our pitcher got the ball and tagged him for assurance. I wanted to know if he was out when the ball hit him or not.

It would depend if the BR was in the running lane. The last half of the baseline the BR must be in the lane. It is three feet wide and includes both lines including the foul line. It is possible he was in foul but had a foot in fair or a foot to the right of the lane so this would an interference. If not then no he isn't out.

Just to make sure, lets say there is no runners interference but runner gets hit by ball and falls to the ground. Pitcher picks ball up and tags runner short of 1B. Its an out right. If so this could create some interesting plays...

To our military men, women and families - You are all awesome - that flag is yours and I thank you for the opportunity for giving me the honor of removing my cap prior to every baseball game I see.
