Is play automatically suspended when the umpire cleans off home plate even though he does not single time out

Not at all.
It's a live ball.
If my parter can get an out while I am cleaning the plate go for it.

Not unless he called time before he did it....its not!...

now, its not especially good form to being cleaning the plate with your butt to the game during a live ball.....

I would not teach that or encourage anyone to do it....but we umpires are however encouraged to avoid time outs when it is not neccesary.......
