Runner on 3rd, batter steps across the plate to put the bat on the ball:
1) Is the batter out if it is a foul ball?
2) If the ball is in fair territory (batter is out). Is it a dead ball and will the runner have to return to 3rd, or is the runner allowed to score?

As soon as the batter leaves the box and makes contact with the ball he is out, the ball becomes dead, and the runner must return to 3rd base.

Coaching Tip
When this occurs teach you hitters to throw the bat at the ball as opposed to step out of the box to make contact.

NFHS rules (7-3-2)

The batter is out and the ball is dead if he hits fair or foul while touching the plate or with one foot on the ground completely outside the lines of the batters box..........

Delete "while touching the plate or" and you have the OBR rule.

The mention of touching the plate is actually redundant, since any touching of the plate is already covered by the point that you can't step out of the box. Last I looked, no part of the plate is within either batter's box.

So in application, the rules are identical. One of them is just verbose.

Not really. It is possible to have your toes on the plate and your heel on the line or even inside the box. If you are touching the plate in HS and hit the ball then you are out. In OBR you have to be completely out of the box. There is a small difference but a difference none the less.

Incorrect.

The line is just six inches from the plate. Even with my size 7.5's I can be in the box and touch the plate. Legal under OBR, illegal under FED.

If contact is made BEFORE the foot hits the ground outside the box,it is irrelevant,is it not? The ball will be played as it is hit.

I think this is what gets many confused about slap hitters in softball,that and the line is in the box.

1. Yes, the foot has to be completely out of the box and on the ground at the time contact with the ball is made.

2. What is "softball"?
