My son, who will be a freshman pitcher this year in high school, is playing winter ball on the JV squad. The head coach told him his two-tone glove is not acceptable in high school. His glove is black and tan. The head coach told us to die the glove all black, since that's the main color. He told us a lot of umpires last year were very stict on any kind of two-tone gloves.

Since first semister finals are this week and no games will be played this weekend, we decided to die the glove all black yesterday.

Has anybody else had to do this?

Just curious on how any Southern California CIF umpires feel on this issue. FYI, the web of the glove was black with tan stitching, if that makes a difference.

Never had to dye a glove, but have seen umpires make a pitcher change gloves during the game more than a few times. The gloves I've seen questioned are more than just contrast stitching, the web or back side was a different color. At least son doesn't have to try and break in a new glove, how did it work?

happened to my son in AAA city ball. Had to run out and get blacl magic marker.

The high school coach is correct.

The Rule is one of many that can be found in the National Federation of High Schools (NFHS).

NFHS

Don't dye your glove. Only White and Gray are illegal. Tell coach the rule is on page 14 of the H.S. rulebook.

Correct......if you dont like an NFHS rule....just wait its most likely to change....

While the uniform in color rule was in effect for 2005 the 2006 NFHS rule book now has clarified the rule only disallowing white or grey gloves or gloves with a substantial amount of white or grey on them (logos or piping).

So all of the black and tan, tan and brown, red or blue gloves are legal as of the 2006 NFHS season.

If you pitch, do not buy a glove that is grey or white or two toned with grey or white and you are fine.

Im very happy with this change as we wasted a lot of time and grief on the old rule.

Oops! Already dyed the glove Will tell the JV coach when I see him next time about the recent rule change.

if there is a white mfg label on the glove, just use a black magic marker on the white part of the label, this should satisfy any ump.
