My son committed to a Division 1 program last fall. During the recruiting process, he talked with the coaches each week. Since the holidays, he has received one email but little else. Is that typical for others that have committed?

Coaches have their hands full right now with the upcoming season. Enjoy the season on the side with them, have your son become familiar with the cast of characters on the team by following the box scores. When he enters the program next fall he will have some background on the team. That knowledge as minimal as it may be is a good start in a culture shock experience next fall.

Not unusual at all, and sounds nomal, based upon our experience, and what I know from 3-4 other kids/parents whose recruitment tracked ours . The schools are in their season now and are focused on that. There isn't much ground to cover at this point but later you'll start getting info about orientation, expected summer workouts, completion of any needed forms for admission, etc. I don't want to say the honeymoon is over, but you're married now. Enjoy the pressure-free spring, but watch out for the senior slump.........

Same with my son. Coach has called twice since signing. But now that the season is here I would be very surprised to have call. Winning is now on his mind, and he will be enrolled and practicing in the fall and will receive all the attention.

Good point by Rz and hokie...enjoy your pressurefree sr year and watch your new program.

I know my son is looking to have fun, win, and then move on to the new collegiat excitment.

Mine has talked with his new coach a couple of times and they've exchanged emails. But a couple of weeks back coach told him to enjoy the spring, keep grades up and that they'd talk about summer workout later on...

It is definitely very common for college coaches to not respond right away with e-mails, phone calls, etc. Especially with a D! program, their main concern right now is getting to Omaha. Trust me, they are just as excited for your son as you are, and they want to keep in touch, but before and during the season is tough with such a demanding schedule and traveling.

Last season, after my son committed we did not hear from his program unless he emailed them or called them during their season. Once their season was over, they communicated a bit more. At first it worried us, but after speaking to several parents of players, we found they were all experiencing this.

I am not sure what the norm is because we have stayed in close contact with the coaches since signing. My son speaks to the pitching coach once a week on the phone and has even spoken with the head coach on occassion. The coach and I also email each other back and forth. One of the reasons my son chose this school over others is because everyone is treated like family. I think that this might be somewhat unusual.

ok ...I know that I posted "coach said enjoy the spring.." which made me think his new college coach would be too busy right now...

well, I was wrong again, head coach called left a message for Bk to give him a buzz when we got in or tomorrow...

so what do I know?

still, BK was happy to hear the message...

Committing gives all the good feeling of acceptance by the other. Coaches keep in touch, perhaps as often, not always. The student is not officialy at school until he goes to class.

Phone calls came to a halt for my son, but we had a question and called Coach on his cell--He was very excited to hear from us and said they can't wait for him to be there next year. Said December and January were dead times for them and not allowed to make personal contacts unless initiated by players. We did get E-mails and letters with updates on how the team was doing and invited us to come to opening games this past weekend. Son talked to all three coaches after the game and they told him after March 1st they would be coming to his HS games on days that they weren't playing. As has been said before, these coaches are focused on winning, but son was pleasantly surprised when they said they would still be attending some of his games.

We've had little contact lately. Coach did call last week and ask that we fax my son's schedule to him.

Us too. my feeling is they will take a look at how the kids are doing this spring and try to get a feel for whether a red shirt is needed or not, so they can plan accordingly (look for a JUCO kid). Is that how you read that? I could be wrong, It wouldn't be the first time.
