Anybody out there ever had an offer pulled off the table? My son and I were set to visit a school outa state but got a call the day before canceling the deal. Was told they signed 2 other kids the day before. Shame we didn't get a phone call before I bought the non-refundable plane tickets. I thought it was a done deal because we had the letter of intent with $ amount in writing. Just goes to show ya.

How frustrating and disappointing! So sorry you have had to go through this. Based on that school's actions, you probably didn't want to play for them anyway. Be glad you found out before you signed.

How long did you have the NLI ?

From what you post I assume you never signed it and returned it---if you had this might not have happened

Did you have an official visit previously?

If so why are you flying out now ?--all you needed to do is fax the NLI back to them

Sign the letter, then have your lawyer talk to them?

Perhaps one of the people on the board can let us know if it is legal to withdraw an offer in that manner.

Legal or not, it is certainly unethical.

Regardless, Infield08 is probably right.

Under standard contract law, until an offer is accepted, it can be withdrawn. Now that is has been withdrawn, signing the letter won't mean anything.

To TRhit, you are correct. We did not sign and return the offer. (dated 4-28-08) We were scheduled to visit the campus for the first time before making our desision. My sons unexpected participation in the JUCO Div. 3 World Series in Tyler Texas delayed our visit 2 weeks but the school was well aware of the situation. Wouldn't trade that for anything. From where I'm standing that school lost out the most.

William Penn is a NAIA school.
NAIA schools are NOT part of the NLI program.
Some NAIA schools have their own letters of intent that are a basic contract between two parties.
NCAA schools under NLI would rarely pull something like this except under extreme circumstances.

Yes you are correct. It is an NAIA school and it is called an Award Notification Letter. Reguardless it's still a bush league play in my opinion. I do agree with your statement about the NCAA not pulling such a move unless there were extenduating circumstances.

plash - I am going to have to respectfully disagree with you. NCAA coaches are not going to wait forever either. They are going to want those papers signed and returned immediately - not 6 weeks later. They would be left holding the bag if it were any other way. The one you should be pointing the finger at is yourself. You had an offer in hand and sat on it. I would use this as a learning experience and move on. The college did nothing wrong imho.

Perhaps I forgot to mention there was open communications between my son and the assistant coach thruout the 6 week period. In fact the college delayed the trip once themselves because of a weekend series away from home. I agree with the school being able to go for the Bird in the Hand but do think I/we were owed a "now or never" phone call before they signed the other boys. This trip was in no way funded by the school in mention therefore I was the one holding the tickets.

Yes I have heard of offers being extended and then rescinded. It happens more than it should but colleges are under more scholly limits now so it will likely happen even more often. It is hurtful but certainly better than showing up and then being cut and then having to sit out a year of eligibility while awaiting transfer. Another reason to have a couple of good "back-up" schools, if your son isn't absolutely in love with one school.

Your right. It was better finding out now rather than later. The thing I had the most heartburn with was the timing. My son talked with the school earlier in the week about the weekend visit, then the tickets were purchased. It wasn't until Thursday that we were notified that his services were no longer needed. Poor way of doing business if you ask me.
