Written communication and phone calls are OK in D1, D2, and D3.
(D1 and D2) 13.02.4.4 Dead Period. A dead period is a period of time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on or off the institution’s campus or to permit official or unofficial visits by prospective student-athletes to the institution’s campus. ........ It remains permissible, however, for an institutional staff member to write or telephone a prospective student-athlete during a dead period.
Bylaw 13.12.1.3 shows that coaches may work at a non-institutional camp or clinic during the dead period, but they may not have recruiting related discussions. Colleges can't hold camps or clinics during the dead period.
There are very few restrictions on the D3 recruiting calendar.

Both dead periods and quiet periods affect recruiting. 13.02.4.3 Quiet Period.A quiet period is a period of time when it is permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts only on the institution’s campus. No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts or evaluations may be made during the quiet period. 13.02.4.4 Dead Period. A dead period is a period of time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on or off the institution’s campus or to permit official or unofficial visits by prospective student-athletes to the institution’s campus.

Great timeline explanation 3fingered..... One question however, my son has committed to a D1 and is trying to obtain a copy of the off season conditioning program that the coaches have printed. Would stopping by the coaches office to retrieve this information be a violation of any kind? I wouldn't think the fact that he has verbally comitted would make any difference. I simply don't want any complications between now and November.

It would only be a violation if it ocurred during a dead period. Between now and Nov. there are no dead periods. There is a dead period in Nov, 9-12, which is the early signing period for NLI's.
Pray not for lighter burdens, but for stronger backs.

My son's school said they couldn't require him to do the work out program while in high school but said if he requested they could provide it as a guideline. He sent an email to the coach and the school responded with "sample" workouts in the off season. All the correspondence was in a contact period.
