I overheard a D1 coach telling someone that his school loses players to schools that can offer athletic and academic scholarships. Is that a D1 rule?

Any school can offer academic money and bundle it with athletic money, but for some schools, the academic awards don't happen in time for the early signing period and, of course, the academic award cannot appear on the NLI.

Of course, the student must qualify for academic money according to the NCAA, or it will be counted against the athletic money by them.

To qualify (old method):
Top 10% of class
3.5 GPA
1200 SATs (old method, without the writing test).

It's probably changed by now, seems to be tweaked annually. Best place to check is on the NCAA website for the current rules.

They will tell you what academic money you will get iof you send an official transcript and an sat/act report. Usually they coach gets your info and goes to the admissions to get the amount. It is pretty staright forward once they have your info.

Not a rule.

Two scenarios are possible.

1. His school doesn't offerr baseball scholarships or is not fully funded (not uncommon) for baseball scholarships, so he can't give out any/as many.

2. His school does not offer much in the way of academic scholarships for athletes.

Skill has its limitations, but luck can take you anywhere!

There are also schools, because of their own rules and regulations that will not combine academic and athletic monies---they give one or the other but not both

The scenarios do differ in large part due to how many baseball scholarships the DI funds. For example, if a school only funds nine baseball scholarships, they may loose out on some players because of monies. If they can pick up players that they want who may be able to qualify for academic money, they don't care if it counts against their 11.7 as long as they stay under that. It's helping them out by a backdoor method and getting dollars from other places. As H3 pointed out, there is a formula for figuring out if it counts or not in the first place.

The above depends on what school the coach comes from.
Some D1 programs DO NOT offer any athletic dollars, some schools do not offer ANY academic dollars.

The D1 rule is that the minimum has to be 25% for a certain number of players. It does not specify in what type of money it has to be.

Thanks for all of your responses. I guess this particular D1 school does not give out academic scholarships. This school is my son's first choice, but he is very smart, and can probably get an academic scholarship as well as an athletic scholarship somewhere else. Maybe... We are new to this process and are trying to figure all of this out.

Thanks

Is it possibly a state school that gives awards for academics?

How do you know that the school does not give out academic scholarships?

Did the coach tell you that?

Coaches now have to be more creative than ever in giving scholarships, don't assume unless he has told you this himself.

Yeah - but watch out. The coach may make you "elect" which one to take (academic or athletic - usually the academic is higher) It is a lot easier to cut kids with academic monies than athletic scholarships.

There are some very highly rated academic schools that do not give academic scholarships. Admission is so competitive that everyone would qualify. Grants are based on need. But need can be higher for a private school that costs $45,000 a year versus a state university at half that cost.
