Good topic Bravescoach. I was wondering why JC players have to register if they start out at JC in order to advance to D1 or 2. I thought the Clearinghouse only applied to HS athletes. We were told at JC in order to move up, son still has to get NCAA certification.

He doesn't need to be registered to receive an offer, but will have to be registered and cleared before he can receive the scholarship money and be eligible to participate. Most kids register with the clearinghouse at the beginning of their junior year, I believe.

High school prospects can't receive a National Letter of Intent and official written scholarship offer from a D-I or D-II institution unless they are registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center and have been placed on a school's institutional request list (IRL).
Regarding the question about JC players needing to register with the Eligibility Center, this is necessary for two reasons. First, it is important for the D-I or D-II school to know if the athlete was a Qualifier coming out of high school in order to know what they must achieve academically at the JC in order to be immediately eligible when they transfer to the D-I or D-II. Prospects who were not Qualifiers when coming out of high school have additional academic criteria that they need to satisfy for immediate eligibility upon transfer.
Second, transfers need to go on the Eligibility Center website and complete the amateurism certification questionnaire.
Another rule that will become effective next year (will affect current high school juniors) for players hoping to sign with D-I institutions - not only will a prospect have to be registered with the NCAA Eligibility Center and be placed on an institution's IRL, but they must complete the amateurism certification questionnaire before they can receive an official written scholarship offer.
This last point will also apply to jc transfers starting next year. They will be required to complete the amateurism questionnaire before they can receive a written scholarship offer from a D-I school.

I forgot to mention in my previous post that high school prospects also can't make official visits to D-I and D-II institutions unless they have registered with the Eligibility Center and have been placed on a school's IRL.
