You can tag some1 hard to get the message across. There is a line that you cross however, if you do it to intentionally injure the player is wrong. If i show bout or take a little to long goin around the bases on a home run i expect a peg my next at bat. I do not however expect a pitch right at the head. No one should ever intentionally try to hit someone in the head with a pitch, or no one should go cleats high on a player. There also is that line with tagging some1 hard. Slap them hard on the back or on the leg maybe a shot to the side of the abs. You get close when you get a hard shot to the helmet but the face no, the croth heck no.

That is my 2 cents from a ball player that does like to payback dirty plays but the clean way.

We have all seen plays where a tag is applied but the ump calls the runner safe. I tell players to leave no doubt in the ump's mind - make the tag so everyone at the field knows it. That does not mean that the fielder has to intend injury.

Most of the stuff in this thread is garbage. You are not big and bad and tuff by giving hard tags or throwing at batters. You are hurting your team because you are more worried about getting even than doing your job.

Besides you might get tossed and probably have to sit out a game - is that really worth it?

You might get hurt yourself by trying to do something to get even - is that really worth it?

You might get one of your team mates hurt because the other team is retaliating - is that really worth it?

If you "have to hit" the next batter to get back at them do you just do it or does the situation of the game make you smarter - what I mean is one run difference (you are up one or down one) or the game is tied. You plunk the lead off batter because you "have to get him back". Now you have put your chance at winning in jeopardy. They might take the lead, increase their lead or tie the game. It could even lead to a big inning - is that worth it?

Just play the game and if something happens let it go. Make the plays and do your job.

If I know one of my guys tries to retalitate in some fashion they are out for a long time - it is selfish behavior and doesn't help the team.

Don't give me that **** about respecting and protecting team mates. You want to do that then get the basehit that scores them in a big situation.

Play the game right.

Let your pitcher take care of it. Its pretty easy to "accidently" let a curveball go into the kid. Dont you do anything because he can make a tag seem way harder than it really can be.

I play 1st base and i was holdin this one kid on and he kept trying to cleat me when he slid back (he was a stupid kid he would always come back cleats first?!?!) But anyways i told the kid on the mounds that the next time he came up i would say "let it rip" and the next time he came up, i did it. My pitch tossed mid-80's into the kids back and he took a 2 step lead and stood there with his hand on his back.

Your son actually got dropkicked during a baseball game?

Are you serious. This has to be some kind of joke. If you need to tag someone hard in the face because they tried to avoid a tag you shouldn't be playing this game. He was trying to avoid getting out. Ever seen a run down? They don't just run to the base they try whatever they can to be safe. How would you like it if the runner lowered his shoulder and ran through you? That's running to the base isn't it?

1. Why hit someone with a CB?
2. I tell my kids to come back cleat first when the 1B (or 2B) is blocking the bag. Maybe he wasn't as stupid as you thought.

I went to tag in the stomach area, and he slid. Thus causing me to tag in the face...

If you went to tag in the stomach area, but ended up tagging in the face because he slid then it's no problem. I took the original post to mean you were mad that he tried to avoid you so you just hit him in the face which is just rediculous. Also, I still don't get why he wouldn't try to avoid the tag. That's like saying why run out a groundball? You're probably going to be out.

I love hard-nose baseball and it is part of the game...there are times when maliciousness is not validated, but other times it is necessary for a hard tag, slide, or inside pitch to protect your teammates.

I like linedrive's explanation. I believe player's should know the game of baseball well enough to know when to slide hard, when to throw inside, etc. If they do then the umpire's should leave it alone...if they're doing it just to hurt somebody then I say get rid of them.
