Agility training (ladders, dots) is excellent.

All Star Training and Conditioning for Baseball(2000) is a great DVD to improve footwork in the infield.

Once a player learns the proper footwork... do what the Latin players do... Field a million ground balls more than everyone else does. I'm serious about that! It really works! Smile

I am with PG here

back in the days when there were no training videos, no training facilities etc that is what you did--field field field --whether you were an infielder or an outfielder

The wall on our house got used regularly when nobody was around to hit to me

“Baseball requires you act with instinct. How do you develop instinct? How do you do this??? Endless hours of practice. Learn through repetition and hard work. Repetition, repetition, repetition.”
Tommy Lasorda

That said, I do think that agility drills that focus purely on moving the feet quicker and more accurately are a good form of repetition that will help the fielder. In addition to taking ground balls every day & practicing the pivot.

TEXAN, TRHIT PGSTAFF....

Good stuff. Agility training does not hurt ya, but you can't just do that... repetition, in the defensive position, should be about 90% of training...

i am a shortstop for my high school and lately i've been in a major slump on defense. i cant get to the ball fast enough and it's killing me, getting by me all the time. any advice on how to improve my footwork, and increase my speed for getting to the ball?

Are you down & ready when the pitch leaves the pitcher's hand? Properly balanced? Feet not spread too far?

Are you watching the bat, rather than the pitch, as the pitch approaches the plate?

Are you getting a good jump on the ball when it is put in play?

Getting a good approach?

There are things other than pure footspeed that are involved.

Somerville, I looked at a couple of your other posts - whens the last time you had an eye exam - seriously, at your age the eyes can change rapidly and its hard to notice - just a thought.
