Trinity H.S. in Euless, TX (Dallas-Fort Worth area) will be competing in San Antonio this Saturday for the state 5A football championship. Lured by the promise of good jobs at the DFW Airport, immigrants from the island kingdom of Tonga have been settling in the suburb of Euless for more than 20 years. An estimated 4,000 Tongans now live in Euless and roughly a quarter of the players on the high school's football team claim Tongan heritage. The team has adopted a Tongan chant/battle cry that they perform before and after every game. Watch the chant on YouTube:

This issue recently came up in Portland, and I wrote about it on my blog. Created a lot of controversy.

Rob, in New Zealand, isn't the big thing for the opposition how you react to the ritual (in Rugby). I don't see a problem doing the dance the way Trinity H.S. does this, because it is towards their fans to get themselves pumped up. The article written on Jefferson High school was a very good one and I would agree with you on the issue.

Yes, if it is directed toward their own fans, no problem.

I agree with your blog that standing on the opposing side and doing it is wrong. Trinity does it right and I have no problem with it. Ask the Jefferson High you write about if they are brave enough to do it in front of these guys?

I had my 5'10 son watch this clip last year when he was playing football and asked him if he wanted to play against this guy? He now plays baseball year round Big Grin

Once you agree upon the price you and your family must pay for success, it enables you to ignore the minor hurts, the opponent's pressure, and the temporary failures.
