How far back should we go? To where mommy didn't hug him enough or to where coach protected him from all the big meanies? quote: Originally posted by TRhit: probably a lot more here
Probably? Doubtful. You have no idea what you're talking about, there is no evidence for your statement, you're just making that up.

What is the big deal about seeing a celebrity walking down the street? And why is it OK for the public to hound celebrities whenever they are noticed somewhere? I realize that this is a kid seeking the autograph but mom or dad is probably there encouraging him.
If he just walks away and quietly gets in his car, it's a non story. If he's got enough time to stop and fill the air with F-Bombs in front of kids, he's got time to sign one autograph.

He's walking on the sidewalk 20ft. from his car. It wasn't as if there was a hugh crowd around him. It would have been a non issue had he taken 10 seconds to signed for the kid then smiled and waved to the other onlookers while getting into his car. Unforunatly for Rios, he makes more money per game than most of us will make in a year. His salary is paid for by the fans and his public persona has been tarnished. Signing an autograph comes with the job.
Exactly. Sometimes it is easier to go along to get along. He proved his point that he is not required to sign, but at what cost? The heckler was right. There will probably be a day soon when he is wondering why nobody wants his autograph. I wouldn't want his autograph. I'm picky though.

Why are autographs so valuable? Where in history did it become popular to get famous people's signature on stuff? I have never, ever wanted to get an autograph from anyone. I never saw the purpose in it. Then again if I'm a player why would I want to sign when a lot of people take the signature and sell it to make gobs of money. They even use little kids to get the autograph which is ridiculous. I'm not defending Rios because regardless of the day he's having or how he feels about autograph hounds there is no reason to drop f bombs. But I can see why he wouldn't want to sign. I know I wouldn't but I'm also not famous.

Coach--to each their own I guess. Autographing is one way that my son and I get to spend time together. Oh, and we don't sell our graphs. I think you will find that the vast majority of collectors don't sell their graphs. Some of the best memories that I have of my father, involve us trying to get guys like Wade Boggs, Jim Rice and Nolan Ryan to sign our cards. Wonderful memories.

316 I didn't mean to offend with what I put to the true collectors like yourself. I don't have a problem with how you do it because I'm willing to bet that you do it the right way and not bother the famous person. While I agree that most don't sell there are enough that it is a problem. I guess it is each their own because I still don't see the attraction of it. But then again my dad could have cared less about autographs too.

On June 4th against the LA Angels Rios struck out in all five of his plate appearances in a 6-5 loss to the Angels in the Rogers Centre. Later that day Rios was videotaped cursing a heckler after he walked past a child seeking an autograph while leaving a fundraising gala for the Jays Care Foundation. Rios has publicly apologized for the incident.[4]

Definitely not Alex's best day... Just as our players should know that there is always someone watching their games, pro players should know that there is always a camera running. Looked to me like the kid was not part of a big crowd - would have been easy enough for Alex to take the paper and pen and sign it while walking along. Wouldn't have cost him any time to speak of - and certainly would have been better than this video. I'm looking forward to the press conference where Alex reads a prepared statement from his agent.
