No, I doubt JoePa will be fired over this. Was he maybe too sensitive toward the alleged perpetrator rather than the victim?
I can see him having to clarify himself if they bring enough pressure to the University. The fact it is now in the Washigton Post is pretty good pressure already. Was it the most tactful way of saying something? Probably not. On the other hand, if my daughter were the victim, I would have no sympathy whatsoever for the perpetrator. An apology/clarification may do the trick here.
I'm usually embarrassed that NOW represents (or claims to) women. They are a bunch of busy-bodies looking for trouble. There is really very little you can say publically that someone won't claim to be offended by. These women need to lighten up and enjoy life a little instead of trying to find someone being politically incorrect.

I hate to admit it, but as soon as I heard Joepa make those comments I cringed because I just KNEW it was only a matter of time before the uproar started. Did I understand what he meant by his statement? Yep! Did he say it the most assanine way he possibly could? Yep! Will this all blow over? Yep!

I should add that PSU has another coaching uproar over sexual innuendo and sexual orientation discrimmination going on at the moment with the.....women's basketball coach. I think Coach Paterno is going to come thru this relatively unscathed.

I agree that Paterno will escape this, tho I agree that he said his point poorly -- and then kept talking!!
But what would happen if this were Bobby Knight or some other more "problematic" coach that said the same thing? I think we all know the answer to that one!

Yeah, he did say too much but you're probably right and nothing will happen other than an apology. I hate to admit it, but he is right when he says the girls knock on the door... How many times have you seen that happen. Just from seeing what the HS girls do nowadays, nothing surprises me much. Some of them are pretty brazen.

My wife and I talked about this last nite when I read the press release to her. Her answer was simple--"What did he say wrong. He spoke his mind.an what he said is very true"
First of all the NOW ladies need "press" because most have forgotten about them and righfully so-- I still dont know what their purpose is

I kind of couched my words in my first reply because this is a sensitive subject and we are in the PC era for which I am saddened.
Lets look at some cases here:
1) JoePa makes insensitve remarks about college victim. Was it troubling - yes, does he have a right to say it however?
2) Bill Cosby is assailed because he suggests that inner city parenting skills aren't what they ought to be and that people need to take responsibility for their own actions.
3) Trent Lott is forced to step down as Senate Majority leader for saying at a 100 year old man's birthday party - "Things would have been better if your party had won"
4) Ward Churchill says (paraphrase) "The victims of 9/11 deserved what they got. They were basically agents of a fascist government, thus 1000's of little Eicheman's got what they deserved."
What is wrong with these scenarios? Sure there were cries for #4 to be fired. However, the argument for keeping this S-O-B around is that he has a right to free speech. Free speech won out for that creep. I didn't hear NOW decry that professor who was insensitive to female and male victims and who were also DEAD as opposed to assaulted.
Do I like what JoePa said, no. Fire him, no way. There was a Merle Haggard tune I liked and it describes how I feel about this topic where one line was "Are the good times really over for good"
The bottom line is this---if you sit in a prominent seat you better not open your mouth about anything or anyone because "someone/some group" will try to use you to their advantage
Our country is getting sicker by the day if not the hour !!!

I have read what he said several times and I just can't figure what he said that is specifically degrading to women. He speculated that perhaps there was more to the story than we knew about. I am sure he has run into situations where women have thrown themselves at his ball players or at least knows of situations where this has happened and then he said he felt sorry for the ballplayer because whatever happened it caused him to lose the opportunity to play in his final football game. He didn't say Nicholson was not to blame, he didn't accuse a women of taking advantage of the player, he simply indicated that it is a shame to see something like this happen.

Obviously my opinion is from a man's perspective but I just can't find a thing "appaling" about what he said. NOW is grasping for straws.....and airtime!

I'm a woman and I agree with you guys. First of all, I don't think he said anything referring to this specific victim. Even if he did and spoke inappropriately, if it was a crime to stick your foot in your mouth, I'd probably would have spent a lot of time in jail.
Let me say that I'm not really familiar with the case of this player or the accusations and this doesn't have anything to do directly with JP, what he said, or being fired, but I just mention - We had a case in KY last year where one of the most highly respected UK basketball players was charged by someone accusing rape. The charges ended up being dropped - the true scenario was a married woman probably ten years older than him who had called him repeatedly and went to lunch with him, had drinks, and returned to his housing where things were consentual. Like TR says, if you're in the spotlight as a coach, or as a player, you'd better be very careful of the positions you put yourself in as well as what you say.

I agree totally. Most of these organizations are really looking for "face time" and twist things that are said until they make people take their side. I, too, am sick of all this P.C. stuff. A lot of the time, people just don't want to hear, or face, the truth and deal with it.

Here's what I don't get. I can't stand the PC stuff. I've never met anyone who agrees with the PC stuff, and that is here, right smack in the middle of PC heaven. So where does it come from???
I'm not out of order! You're out of order! The whole freakin' system is out of order! You want the truth? You want the truth?! You can't HANDLE the truth!
