Tonight was senior night for the Generals, a night that lafmom probably feels was just yesterday, and which I know is coming way too fast for me!
As is the custom, all of the seniors (6 of them) started and tonight, they played the whole game. One of them is a fine young man with wonderful parents who was slotted to be a starting outfielder and cleanup hitter this year. Unfortunately, in the 2nd game of the season, he tore his PCL and was out for the year. He postponed surgery until after the season, and has come in for pinchhitting duties, particularly when the Generals need a long fly ball. He has been the designated team captain all year, and has dressed for every game. Chances are, he is finishing up his baseball career on this note of an injury, but he is a brilliant student and will be going on to wonderful things.
Well, tonight, he played DH. In his first at bat. . .he hit a home run. In his second at bat, he hit a ball to the fence. In his third at bat, he hit ANOTHER home run. It was absolutely one of the most wonderful things that I have ever seen, the crowd was standing and cheering, and he made it around those bases, it wasn't fast, but all of us were willing him on, while he had a HUGE grin on his face. What a night. As my son said: "that's a night that he is never going to forget the rest of his life." You know what? I don't think I will either.
John - As you can imagine, this story brings tears to my eyes. I am traveling alot this week and couldn't make it to the game - now I'm super regretful I wasn't there. A. is one of the finest young men anyone could ever hope to meet.
He's going to school up north very close to a school Michael is interested in. To know they would be able to spend time together would be an extra blessing for my son.
Senior night is always a meaningful time at Lafayette, but to know such a special young man had such a great night is just awesome!!!!
