Has anyone in KY heard about a new rule that the KHSAA has put in? I believe it is about coaching. I was told by an assistant coach at another school that the KHSAA is requiring that all coaches in all sports, to have, at least 64 hours of college credit hours. He said that he has to go back and take some classes to become eligible again.

If this is true, I don't have a problem with it.

Tas, I had heard some rumors about this, but it hasn't been a big topic here in Lexington. Most of our coaches, are teachers in the system. Therefore, they have more than that number of hours. The softball coach at Lafayette isn't a teacher, but I think all of our other sports are coached by a teacher. Teachers get first dibs on any coaching position here - I don't know if it's like that everywhere else or not. It's an interesting requirement - obviously I would wonder about the effects. Do some areas have trouble filling coaching positions?

I haven't heard of any problems with hiring any coaches. I heard it for the first time this weekend.

I am assuming that this rule is targeting assistant coaches. Since head coaches do have to have a KDE certificate to coach HS sports. I know of some teams that have assistant coaches with no college experience what-so-ever.

I would like to see elementary sports to be done the same way. There are so many schools that have a parent coaching and their kid gets more playing time over another that may deserve to play, especially in the SE region of KY. But, I don't think that the boundaries of the KHSAA reach out to the elementary level.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with this.

You are correct Tas, KHSAA only applies to Highschool sports. Lafayette has three varsity coaches and they are all teachers and our head JV is a teacher as well. The assistant on JV is a college grad. I do know of one baseball program in town that uses lots of parents as assistants, however I'm thinkin they're probably all college grads, so I'm not sure that this rule would help weed those out. Coach Langston will not take a parent as an assistant and while I've heard a rare complaint about that, I personally think it's very good rule. It will be interesting to see what this does if it is in effect.

I asked a couple of coaches about this rule. I was told it's one of those rules that the KHSAA is starting to push.
