In keeping with our tradition of having a thread for each semester, I thought it might be fitting to begin on New Year's Day.
This thread has provided an opportunity for us to all share our and son's experiences as well as to jump in there with questions and opinions if your son plans on being a college player. Those thoughts and stories of those who's sons have completed this journey are appreciated as well.
May 2007 bring many joys for all of our college guys and safe travels as they head back to school over the next couple of weeks. Mine has to be back Sunday (his birthday is on Monday ).

Happy New Year, everyone. I noticed you're up-and-at-em this morning, Lafmom. Not too much birthday celebration last night??
Mine starts classes and practice next Monday, with the first game just 5 weeks from tomorrow!! It's his last season, so we're feeling a little bittersweet. We're hoping he has a more predictable spot in the rotation, which should make our travel planning easier. Hoping to make it to many more games this season!

LOL I won't even share with folks what I decided to do with my evening, but my daughter's response was "mom, you're getting really old". Needless to say, it wasn't anything very exciting!
The battle of a pitcher's parents and making traveling plans continues to be something that baffles me a bit! It's certainly not easy! My son will be in a relief role with a few starts as well. I would assume the starts will be non-conference which means vacation days. I've scheduled a bunch knowing that I'll get to see his team and hopefully him!

As we've discussed before, that's the only attitude to have. We long ago adopted the mantra that we would travel to see our son and to see some baseball games -- if we got to see our son IN a baseball game, well, that was the "gravy."

Lhpx2, AGREE It took me a little while but I finally got that! I also found out that pitchers are a little more relaxed and sociable(no game face) if they know they won't be pitching. Always seems to help if the last outing was a good one

Coach Merc - thanks very much - I believe that was basically a rehash from a previous article. He told me as he left this morning that baseball is on his mind
Has Joe left back for campus? I'll bet he and the entire family are excited right now
I can just truly "feel" the excitement from everyone that's posted so far! Isn't that thrill of knowing baseball season is just around the corner the best!!!

Played catch for the first time in months yesterday. I notice I am not much of a slick fielder anymore. Probably because I have to use a catcher's mitt to protect my hand and my reactions just aren't what they used to be but it sure was nice to spend some time together the way we did everyday for years while he was growing up.
Lafayette doesn't start until the 21st so we have a couple more weeks to enjoy his company at home.

CD, Joe leaves on the 13th. He's been working hard over the vacation and can't wait to get going. We have a few trips planned early and as long as he travels it will be great to see him in uniform. He told us not to worry he'll be there.
I'm sure as with Tyler and the rest of the boys. It's an exciting time of year for them. Yea it was nice to be home for holidays, but it's time to get going.

Hopefully, I'll be able to post in College Experiences V. I'm getting excited about the upcoming HS season and both B, and his lil' brother are waiting anxiously to get on the field.
Good luck to all this season.

jmepop - this is funny I was just telling a friend the other day I can no longer play catch with my son. Two summers ago, I caught one in the palm and the next day my hand was so swollen I could barely type. I would use a catchers mitt as you suggest but I am left handed No, I am not going to go out and purchase a left-handed catchers mitt. It would only take me 20 years to break it in
Hmmmm.. Either you guys are really old or your kids throw really hard! Try catching the ball in the pocket! Whatever you do , don't try catching it with your head like I did. That won't work and it REALLY HURTS!

No, I am not going to go out and purchase a left-handed catchers mitt.
Since in my family, the lefties outnumber the righties (which, let me tell you, makes for a very interesting experience when we all go out to dinner -- especially when they seat us in a booth ), my husband DID go out and purchase a lefty catcher's mitt (not easy to find...). It's well broken in, CD, so you can borrow it if you want . As the years went on, he also received (via appropriate Father's Day gifts) a mask, chest protector and leg pads!

I think it is a little of both. I also notice that I don't see the ball as well as I used to, makes for some awkward catches that are mainly self defense. Although Joe is now prmarily a 1st baseman, he was a pretty good pitcher through HS and it seems he can still chuck the ball pretty darn hard.

JME - I would also be a heck of a lot easier if the darn things didn't move all over the place as they're screaming in at you!!!!
lhp - If Mr. Lhpx2 is done with the gear, send it on up!!! I might look dorky in it but it would bring back old times and I'd fell a heck of a lot safer!!!
