What are some of the good DIII's with good academics in Ohio? Just starting our search for '07 and started looking in northeast and Virgini (mostly out of habit) but think it might be wise to explore some schools in Ohio. Where to start?

Marina...Good luck on your search. There are several DIII schools in Ohio. Here a few that come to mind; Ohio Northern, Oterbein, Wittenburg, John Carroll Univ., Lake Erie, Marietta College and Wooster. I'm sure there a few more and a good DII school would be Ashland Univ.

Check the main page of this website for a list of most DIII schools.

Marina,

The schools Buckeye lists have good academic reputations and many of the D3's in Ohio are considered liberal arts schools. For baseball, Wooster is currently ranked #1 in the nation, Marietta is #8, and I believe Otterbein is number #15. Heidelberg has a very fine baseball program and academics.

Since I don't have any cool college (or even HS) experiences to share yet, I do what I can to help out around the place and earn my keep.

Ohio Wesleyan has shown some interest in my son. No official recruiting yet, I guess. But they do send things to him, at least, once a week.

B is weighing his options. He is just a junior and hopes to have a few more interests in the next year or so.

I have a friend who transfered to Ohio Wesleyan as a junior (from a D2 in Indiana) and absolutely loves it. Good academics and good baseball.

Have you been there or gotten any other feedback? I'm sure CD, lhpx2 or bee or a couple others from around here can help out. I looked at it briefly when I was in HS because I had a couple relatives go there and one of my team mates played there. Excellent academics, very nice campus, probably expensive ($35k - $37k??), not sure how good the baseball program is though.

Recieved some feedback from coach (e-mails). Invited son to camp. B wasn't able to go to camp because he was scheduled for another camp on that same day. Yes, it is expensive. But, I have done some research on the program and the campus and academics are a plus. If CD or anyone else has any thoughts or info, it would be appreciated.

tas - I really don't know much about Ohio Weslyan. A methodist school obviously Smile

My son had a teammate from his summer team go there this fall for baseball. The kid was a good hs player and played at a large catholic hs here in Cleveland.

One small anecdote not related to baseball. I was raised in the Methodist church and as a kid spent a week at Wesley Woods in the summer time near Grand Valley Pa in the Allegheny mountains. There was religous stuff to do of course but we had a ball during our free time Smile

I do know a bit about Ohio Wesleyan. It is just up the road (about 20 miles) from Columbus in Delaware, OH. Though affiliated with the Methodist church, it isn't a particularly religious institution. It has excellent academics and is (as mentioned before) a fairly expensive school (most private schools are).

One of my son's best friends from summer ball plays both football and baseball there. He had real opportunities to go DI in both sports, and he was seriously courted by a couple of Ivy schools because he was such an excellent student-- he really enjoys OWU where he gets to do everything he wants. Their baseball program used to be (up until a couple of years ago)a top-ranked (nationally) program, but their long time coach retired and they have fallen off a little. However, they will probably regroup and rise right up again.
