In the general forum there is a thread about why kids quit and it got me to thinking about the kids that don't.

When Joe was 12 we lived in Gaithersburg Maryland and he played on a select team that went to Cooperstown. I decided to try and figure out what that team was doing now and found that almost all the kids were still playing. The amazing thing is the list of schools.

Lafayette P/1B
University of Richmond P
University of Maryland OF
Towson State P
Southeastern Louisiana P
University California P
University California Irvine P
Lasalle SS
Montgomery College JUCO Inf/P
Winthrop next year. P

There may be 1 or 2 more from that team that I couldn't locate. This was a team of kids that lived only in Gaithersburg so I just thought it was pretty amazing to find that many still going strong. Obviously we have been blessed to have played with so many talented kids that kept thier love of the game.

Interesting stats jme! I've never gone back to do that with any of my son's teams. Off the top of my head I know schools of a HS Select team son was on, but I'd have to go back and find old rosters to do what you've done - I know alot though went on to play college ball. I think that probably the kids that have worked hard and who's parents have invested more into the game (select/travel teams) probably have the drive to go on and play college ball as opposed to those who weren't nearly as passionate about the sport. noidea

Lincoln Trail JUCO OF/LHP
Miami of Ohio OF
Tusculum OF/P
Kennesaw State C
St. Catherine JUCO OF
UK signee P
St Xavier LHP
W. KY P
Gardner Webb P
W KY IF
U of Cincy IF
Hiwassee JUCO IF
W. KY C
Austin Peay P

Three didn't go on to play college ball and two kids did, but I don't know the schools they went to. Again though these were older boys and doesn't make quite the same impact as taking a roster when they were 12.

Wow Eek I would have hated to run into that team in the summer jme Big Grin Very impressive and an interesting topic. I think there is much merit to what you say.

From my sons high school and former teammates (2004 & 2005):

University of SanFrancisco - of
Wooster - 2 players - catcher & pitcher
Marietta - of
Chandler Gilbert CC - of (since been cut)
Lakeland CC - (pitcher & inf)

From summer team:

Ohio Weslyan - inf
Oakland University - pitcher
John Caroll - pitcher
Heidelberg - inf

I am sure there will be some more from the 2006 class.

If we include his high school and select teams the list gets even more incredible.

HS from soph year to senior year

Chicago Cubs 7th round P
Baltimore Orioles 14th round OF
Los Angelos Dodgers 4th round inf
Los Angelos Dodgers 42 round DNS Juco PBCC C/INF
Notre Dame 2 pitchers
FIU C
Barry University P
FAU P
Lipscomp P
PBCC 3 other players 3rd, 2nd and C
Daytona Beach OF

His select team was even more amazing

Marlins 1st round P
Cardinals 1st round supplemental P
Indians early round think 2nd inf
Pirates 14th round OF

and too many colleges to even list.

As I said we have had the chance to play with some outstanding atheletes and I can honestly say all of them were good kids. I truly believe that baseball does a great job of shaping young men.

That's alright. It seems like everybody outside of Ohio calls it that anyway.
