What is the average speed for a freshman in high school from home to first? Also, what are some ways to improve speed without going to the gym?

Freshman, I don't know. Good times to aim for are sub 4.3 for a right handed hitter or 4.1 for a lefty.

Great ways to improve speed are simply doing sprints and plyometrics. Here is a website and some articles about speed training. I believe in part 2 or 3 they give away a program that you could do.

Well, if you don't want to go to the gym (why?) then you're prety much limited to sprints, bodyweight exercises and odd-object lifting. This can be very effective if done properly.

Either way, speed is all posterior chain and dynamic hip flexibility. Your hamstrings and glutes need to be strong, powerfull and ballistic.

Push a car around your neighborhood or an empty parking lot.
