My son, A college baseball player, wants to put on about 15 pounds in 90 days. Is this possible and if so, what is the best way. Legal way that is.

Why 15 pounds? Why 90 days? What is he currently doing?

Possible, most certainly.
Expect that this will be fat for the most part, heavy weight training for 15 pounds of hypertrophy (muscle growth)is a very difficult goal. Except in rare occassions of collisions, or in the force forward generation in pitching (f=ma when summated against the planted front foot), fat weight has little value to a ballplayer

If he has not gained weight over the last few weeks or months, look at the weight of food he is eating. Then increase the weight (not calories just yet) 50%, then 100%. In two weeks, you will see a weight gain
AND an ablity to consume larger quantities.

Examine what he is eating (fats, carbohydrates or proteins). Increase fats ( 9 cals per gram) as much as possible; carbs and proteins = 4 cals per gram)

You can only eat so much quantity, eat more fats than anything. He will gain weight.

Healthy eating? Dubious.

no offence brilliant mind, but this is actually terrible advice.

if anything cut out unecessary or empty calories and replace them with complex carbs and high quality proteins. any moron can eat nothing but bon bons and ding dongs for 90 days and put on 15 lbs of fluff. 15 lbs of lean mass is doable but its gonna take a lot of work.

The question was "Putting On Weight". I answered that question with the undeniable mathematics involved. I also offered that this was of dubious value from a health standpoint.

I have to ask why does he want to put on 15 pounds? If it is for baseball purposes, I would recommend for him to focus on becoming stronger per pound. Once you are at a certain strength level, then you worry about putting on weight. At Wichita State, we would put on weight without really trying. If you TRY to add weight, unless you do it perfectly, you will most likely add excess fat, which will only hurt what your ultimate goal is.

It's a pretty easy thing to see that most 3rd basemen are a little thicker than middle infielders. I am making a move from SS to 3rd this next year going into a d1 junior college. Is there a certain body type that scouts and coaches are looking for? I've been told that i'm not fast enough to play middle infielder at the next level. I am about 6' 170 and run a little over a 7.1-60. Is there anything that I need to do beside get faster? would you say that I need to gain weight before I'm seriously considered as a solid recruit at 3B?

You sound fine to me for a 3rd baseman so long as you can hit. The weight will come. Also, do not discount what speed training may do for your 60 time. A short stop moving to 3rd probably has good range and a strong arm. Some 3rd baseman are power hitters without a good glove and/or range, but a solid glove and a good bat will get the job done as well. You will probably put a fair amount of weight on once you get into the program the school has put in place. Don't sweat it, you sound fine. Best of luck to you !

When I was around your age I gained between 10 and 15 pounds over a summer. I used these techniques:

- I ate a lot of meat, mostly steak. Also your daily vegie's and fruits.
- I also drank protein shakes and/or creatine drinks (some people don't recommend creatine but it worked for me).
- Lastly, and maybe most importantly, I was in the gym 4 to 5 days a week.

So, if you really want to gain weight, there are a few tips.
