we are going to a 2 day a week program for the fall. we have golfers, footballers, crosscountriers, etc. we want them playing other sports but want them in the weightroom too. i study this stuff all the time and understand the sportspecific/functional training thing that if all our kids did 365 days a year is play baseball would be great. but in the real world our kids dont do that - its unrealistic. just looking at a realistic program for high school kids that play more than one sport.
here is the basic program - vary the secondary lifts a little each week - but this is the guts of it for the fall - 10 week period.(during the winter we vary it up more and add abs, speed/quickness, endurance, etc.)

fall 2009

mondays
arm circles/stir pot
tube
jobes
squat(bfs cycles)
bench(bfs cycles)
stepups 3x8
calfraises 3x8
st leg deadlift 2 x10
wrist/forearm 3 x 1 x 20
dots
arm circles/stir pot

thursdays
arm circles/stir pot
tube
jobes
power clean(bfs cycles)
dead lift(bfs cycles)
lat pull 3 x 8
bentover row 3 x 8
nosebreaker 3 x 8
bicep curls 3 x 8
wrist/forearm 3 x 1 x 20
ladder
arm circles/stir pot

this is generic and suppose to be. input?

Not a big fan of BFS. That program has been the same for 25+ years-there are a lot of other "schemes" out there that are more effective.

But the overall setup looks fine. More low back and abs....

Along with changing the secondary exercise, change up the primary one every 3 weeks to avoid accomodation.

Then maybe the 10th week have some sort of lift a thon for the kids and compare where they were when you started.

we chart the core lifts everyday we lift to see gains. we also chart 40 times, pro agility times, dots and verticle jump. like i said we become more intensive when we start the winter program. we will add tons of ab work, speed quickness, agilities, etc. i'll post the entire program when i get it typed up. i have it on paper and you can get the old version looking at our website. that program is from 2006. like everything we do on and off the field we are constantly studying, researching and changing. so alot of it is the same but we've made adjustments over the last 3 years.we have very few baseball only athletes. what we do as a coaching staff(football, basketball and baseball) is try to find the best program we can to accomodate this. the totally sport specific off season programs dont work for us. we work together - no infighting for players. 90% of our kids play two or three sports. our goals are more toward becoming better athletes as a whole.
