Jon, I heard a guy talking about some kids getting tested for overall strength and flexibility. Is there any sort of standard for such tests? If so, could you describe the test, and what the individual would be measured against?
Thanks!

Not really. Certainly there are some standards such as long jump, medicine ball throw, 60 time, sit and reach, etc, but you have to take those with a grain of salt. If you can be a little more specific I may be able to point you in the right direction.

What I think I heard is that a kid was told he was deficient in hamstring strength vs. quad strength, and that he was only 75% flexible with regards to his hammies. Not sure this makes sense, but I think it's what I heard. Also, what is a barometer for bench press? A percentage of your weight? What is a goal for the number of dips one can perform? thanks!

Yeah take all of that info with a grain of salt. Just depends on who is measuring and what they are using to measure. The bench and dips completely depends on who you are, what you are training, etc. There are no standards.

Jon,

I have a question for you if you don't mind. My wife did a few of those "how tall will my son be" tests on the internet - (I'm 6'0" - Mrs. Norstar is 5'6" - Jr. is 5'5" - 115lbs, 13 years old)

Some test had him reaching 5'11" and another 5'7" - Are these just bogus tests? I understand that predicting height is VERY difficult, just thought I would see what you thought.

Bogus...My mother always told me I was going to be 6'0". That's what the doctor told her after doing some lame test. Considering I'm 5'8 I don't think the test was too "scientific".

I love my mom, but still blame her for getting me excited throughout my entire childhood thinking I was going to be 6'0. Talk about a disappointment...especially when a dozen scouts tell you they'd draft you if you were 6'0 Wink

They say I'm supposed to be 6-2 at birth. Now, they say I'm going to be 6-4.

I think in-season med ball workouts are some of the best to do.

They promote athleticism, power and speed without the breakdown of muscles. In most cases they actually increase recovery, obviously a large goal of in-season training.

Just be sure to keep in-season training short. Typically two 20-25 minute sessions is more than enough.

Jon, I assume you mean 2 20-25 min. sessions per week?

In-season in college, we would train minimum 3 days a week hard. Some times we would train 5 days a week including game days. Starting pitchers have a routine they can go through during the week, and they should maintain it throughout.

Ignore the 'height' calculators, as I was told to do about three years ago on this site when I was all worried about it. I'm 5'11" and wife is 5'5". They had my sons maxing out at 5'11", with 5'10" being the most common result.

Son 1 just turned 18 yesterday and is 6'1" and still going.

Son 2 is 14 and 6' with several years' growth still ahead.

The men on wife's side are all 6'3", 6'4", so it's not all just about the father and the mother. There are other genes in the mix!

Careful there. Ol' JD and the mods won't take too kindly to you offering advice that people can't buy from Doyle's website...

It's not that you can't buy it from Jon's site, it's that he offers helpful information on this site without introducing his site. The only time he mentions his site is if someone is interested in one of his products. You, on the other hand, are the complete opposite. You would think EVERYONE backing Jon and not you would give you the heads up that you're wrong.
