After reading all of the threads about supplements and other things that have "added" ingredients that aren't on the label, does anyone know of approved protein pwders that are guaranteed to be ONLY protein?

A good quality Whey Protein at GNC will work. How old is your boy? If he is not lifting a lot then a good diet is all he needs IMO. (not that I am some guru on the subject)

I looked and could not find the link, however there is a whole bunch of activity in the NCAA on the subject and proteins and other suplaments are not allowed to be given to athletes by the schools. I did not know this since my son is not yet in college.

My son is a big incoming freshman. All of his baseball buddies are pumping iron now. He will start now also. I just want him to have something safe to take. Some of his friends on the team are taking all kinds of stuff and I don't want him trying it because I don't think they have any idea what they are taking.

I know Jon Doyle has recommended a couple here if you do a search on protein. I will look at what my son is using this evening. I went to GNC and talked to a guy there that knew the various brands. He takes two kinds, one fast acting for right before and after lifting and then a slow acting in the evening.

Dman. There is another thread here that has a mention on some products.

My son is using AMP Wheybolic Exreme 60, as the fast acting and Nitro Core 24 as the slow.

As others have posted in some other threads he eats a well balanced diet that has lots of natural protein. He put on 15 LBS this summer working out (I am sure some of this is natural growth)

I can reccomend from experience 100% Whey..

http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/opt/whey.html

(hope i dont get in trouble for that link im not advertising!)

Also I would reccomend Cytosport Cytogainer, all it is is low fat calories to add to your diet during a bulk.

http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/cs/gainer.html

These are pretty straight forward, no look-alike steroids or stuff like that, and it wont fill you muscles up with water or give you kidney problems.

I read John Doyle a ton so I am anxious to see his reply!

I offer Syntrax supplements, including protein powder, on my website. I was looking for a supplement company, and decided to go with Syntrax because it had a good reputation and all of their protein products are approved by the NCAA--big help since I am a college coach. You can get 40% off the retail prices ordering thru my site - http://coachbook.ning.com/notes/Supplements

Interesting to this discussion----while in the hospital last week for a number of days the doctors asked a number of times if I were taking any over the counter supplements--I asked why and their answer was quite simple--"You have no idea what is in any of them. We want to know just in case something strange pops up in your blood work."

Got to wonder how any of this works in conjunction with heavy antibiotics or even blood thinners for that matter.

As far as "added ingredients not on the label" you should be ok with any of the major brands - GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, Muscle Milk, Optimum.

While there certainly is some history of compounds popping up in products, and there's no way to guarantee it besides each batch being tested (same with any food as well), it just doesn't make sense for any of the major companies to spike their protein. Its very easy to get caught and it would bring down the company.

I believe MuscleMilk is the only "approved" brand by the NCAA, but that is only their "collegiate" line that is tested for banned substances.
