My son is planning to play in the Coastal Plains League this summer. He says it's important to play in a summer league so he can attain a player profile. He is to play for the copperheads - http://www.teamcopperhead.com/. At this point in his baseball, all I do is fork out the $$$$$ and attend games when I can. He will listen to me if I give advice, but I know NOTHING about anything when it comes to summer leagues. Does anyone know anything about this team copperhead?

it shouldn't cost you anything to play in summer collegiate ball, maybe travel one way. they have host familys they stay with and offer jobs.pretty good deal.maybe this league is different, but call the team they will tell you anything you want to know.let us know how you make out.good luck

You or I should say Your son should receive a package form the team covering team policy on pretty much any question that he or you might have. I am sure that if you have any questions that his college coach or someone from the Copperheads Organization will be happy to answer them. Good luck!

P.S. Misc spending money will of course be a concern for all us parents. Just a thought on the summer job, in leagues that travel alot, teams have found that the summer job is harder for the boys to handle due to the amount of time that they spend on the road. Just a thought.

bballnh good thought abnout the travel. a few years ago i was part of a group trying to buy a necbl franchise, to bring to the seacoast. the summer job was something they recomended.some teams had baseball clinics in the day time ,to keep kids busy because they played at night.adjusted schedules to fit the away games.alot of teams we talked with said the kids had more money than they did.lol.it can be a grueling summer with the travel and so forth but the experience of a lifetime.

Every league is different, but most do not charge to participate. At the Cape, there is a charge of 500.00 for the host family, payable per week or all in advance. Partial travel is covered.
Many of the teams secure jobs for the
players for them to earn extra money. Field work, hleping with baseball clinics. The employers are aware of basebll scheduling.
As far as shelling out the $$$$, it might be worth while to do so as summer league is very important to the college player for added exposure, time on the mound or to play with wood bats.

A couple of clarifying points:

(1) The "$500 fee" referred to by TPM stems from an NCAA requirement that host families be paid a minimum of $50 per week by the guest player.

(2) The NCAA prohibits the team from paying more than $250 each way in travel reimbursement.
