Once a player commits - verbally, can the family/player - relax? Should you continue to showcase/scout? Has anyone experienced "the deal" falling through, prior to the official signing day? (Nov)

hitbombs,
woops seemed to have hit the wrong reply button. Roll Eyes

I see that you have posted this in another thread, no wonder I am so confused. Good advice offered in the other thread.

I said yes, once one verbals, relax ad enjoy! I thought you meant between verbal and signing????

According to the NCAA web-site verbal offers are not binding on the player or the college.

ECB,
You are absolutely correct, but coaches don't make offers and then usually recind them before signing. The whole premise of the early verbal commitment is to stop the recruiting process. The coach wants to wrap things up as soon as he can and the player has found the right fit for himself. Many players committ early because the process becomes stressful and wants it to end.

There is a certain trust factor in the verbal commitment in college baseball between player and coach. Once a player verbally commits I think he and his parents can relax between that time and signing day.

I'm hearing UGA makes verbal offers then doesn't follow thru.....don't answer phone calls from recruit, etc.

ECB

I know I told you in PM that with my nephew only a freshman on the Georgia team that I really wasn't in the know enough to answer questions about Georgia's recruiting practices. But I'll go out on a limb and say that I find it highly unlikely that such things occur. Sounds like maybe you are hearing these things from people that don't care for or have something against the Georgia program. My personal opinion is that it's inappropriate to be making statements that begin with "I'm hearing..." without saying who you are hearing these things from, and where they are getting their information. Sounds a little too much like some negative recruiting practices that may be undertaken by competitors without any facts to back it up. JMO.

ECB,
I think your getting confused between a vebal offer and a vebal committment (agreement) to that offer. I have not heard of any school recently that has not held up their end of the agreement when a player accepts their offer and commits to the program.

On the other hand it is very common for schools to make an offer and then pull it off the table after a period of time. Schools may make an offer (same offer to more then one player of the same position) to a number of players. When one accepts and verbally commits then the offer is recinded to the others. There are many reasons why an offer is pulled off the table. A few being, another player accepted, the school feels the player is not sincere, the school is no longer interested, academics, etc,.

As others said... sounds like you may have a slanted view. One thing to remember when you are listening in the stands to someones Fish story about how "XYZ school wanted my Son ....but..."

Its a fish story to possibly save face. Also without knowing the specifics of your situation its hard to say what did or did not happen.

Did the kid not qualify academically? Did he have off the field issues? Did he say he had a 3.0 when he has a 2.4 or score 900 on his SAT's? Where is he playing now?

IT is common practice for a Top level program to give a time limit for a player to commit once they give them an offer. BUT IMO any kid that verbally commits to UGA gets the chance to sign in November. I can speak for the last 2 years every kid that verbally committed in late Summer/Fall was able to sign in Nov and did.

Besides the slanted view there may by as Coach Merc suggests a little confusion on your part, not only about offers vs. commitment but also about the recruiting process. Just because a kid gets a letter from a school doesn't mean they are being actively recruited. Many schools will send out many letters including camp letters. Between this post and your other negative posts about UGA recruiting practices, I would say if u or the kid being recruited is so concerned go play for the nerds at GT (just a little GT humor... but thats for another website).

One last thing ...I just noticed...under your bio you list yourself as a coach and scout??? If true and you are associated with East Cobb as your name suggests how could you be asking these questions???? Any scout worth the loose change in their pocket would have a better understanding of the process and enough contacts to find and understand the truth.

If you are truly a Coach/Scout who is helping kids with their college decisions (for their sake I hope not)...have enough manhood to call Coach Perno and ask him about your hypothetical situations.

Dawg fan-

Great response.

I'm always leary of someone who sys"I have a friend who is".

My bet is that ECB is neither a coach or a scout. Most likely his son is not being recruited by Georgia.

I happen to be a Jacket fan , but admire but GT and UGA for their academics and athletic programs.

I'm not going to defend EastCobbBaseball, cause most folks know they have their own share of problems. I'm not going to defend or bash UGA. I don't have a dog in that fight. Sorry, just had to say that. I too have heard folks I know talking about some of stuff they experienced wth UGA recruiting. Not really anything you can put your finger on, just surprised with the way they were treated. Go ahead DAWGboy and tell me what a terrible person I am now for talking bad about almighty UGA.

And all I can say is my nephew had absolutely no problems with UGA's recruiting and loves the school, his teammates and the coaches. So far, his freshman year has been a great experince for him.
