my son thinks he would like to enter the draft just to see if he generates any interest...we have no clue as to how to go about doing that...what's the protocol for entering the draft?

bballmom2...A player does not "enter" himself into the draft in major league baseball. Some one with more expertise on this subject than me will respond soon and tell you how the process works.

bballmom2, the only players elegible for the draft are those who have their name submitted to the commissioner's office by one of the MLB clubs. Once a team submits the player's name they are assigned a draft number and can be drafted. Players cannot sign up directly and cannot have anyone nominate them.

Add'l to infielddad's comments ... the MLB scouting bureau can also submit a player's name, if I understand correctly.

Is there a cut-off date for player names to be submitted by scouts? In other words, have scouts already submitted all players that can be considered in the June 7th draft?

I'm not sure but I think that there is a 24 or 48 hour deadline prior to draft day. This is a (possibly wrong) recollection so maybe someone else can answer better.

I think the only way to "enter" the draft is to be scouted. When you get scouted in a game or a camp, the scout will give you a card tosign, with name, age, DOB ht. wt., etc. If he thinks you ara good enough he'll submit your name to the commissioner's office. I'm pretty sure that's how it works.

bballmom2,

Your son should have received by now at least some player profile questionnaires and medical release forms from the MLB teams that are interested if he is considered a draft prospect. In some cases he would have already been contacted by a scout that has seen him play. During this last week before the draft many scouts are contacting prospects to guage signability and watching playoff games to get a last look at potential draft picks.

If your son has not heard from any scouts or received any questionnaires then chances are slim that he is on the draft list. It is still possible but not very likely. I know that this is not very encouraging information, just trying to keep it real.
