I waqs just wondering what a typical scout card would look on an average player who gets drafted in, say, the 25th round. Like a firstbaseman. Would he have a power rate of 5 (2-8 scale) and fielding of 4, speed of 2? I've always been curios what some of the draftees ratings and tools were like.

Can't imagine someone with those numbers being drafted.

There are all kinds of scouts, however.

Sounds like an "organizational player" type...to fill a roster for a year or two..

I wasn't talking about anyone in particular. Just want to know what ana verage scout card would for someone right smack in the middle round. Like the 1b I used last post. OK. the average pro pop time for catcher's is 2.0 seconds. How many catchers in the draft can actually hit 2.00 or less? How many CF's run less than 7.0 60 yards? and how many 3B have a power rating of 5 or can hit a ball 400 ft in the draft?
I should know cause they had a sinle A team in town but I was too young to remember, and they left town too. I'm just curious. This questions doesn't have anyone particular in mind, I just want to know what their skill level is like.

Your question does not have any one cast in stone answer.

What you will find with most mid-round draft selections, of position players is that each will have at least one + (plus) skill. In most cases at least two.

This is of the five (5) tools often spoken about by scouts.

For example a player may have a plus power rating, or another may have exceptional speed but a minus arm, etc.

It would be somewhat unusual to find a player drafted that had all evaluations in the middle of the road.

Keep in mind that it's all about projectability. A player needs to show the scouts some tool or tools that can be the building block for a future big league career.

I figured it would be something like that. And what do you mean by plus skill? At least a 5 on the 2-8 scale? So basically a typical player will have 3's and 4's and hopefully turn out at least 5 in some categories?

An average high school player might actually have 2's and 3's (20 - 30). Keep in mind the rating system is based on MLB skills.

So comparisons are based on what a major league player would rate. Few high school players will have many skills that would be at an average MLB level. (40 - 50)

This article may help explain:

When I was coming back from rehab I was throwing my 2nd true bullpen at a tryout for team colorado. A cross-checker gave me a 2 and 6 on my evaluation of my fastball. Does that mean 2 is where I was at that time and the 6 is where he projects me?

Tallman,
Based on the article Bob cited above, YEP, that's exactly what it means.

Why not? Sorry to bump an old thread but I'm quite curious here. A 1b with a power of 5, fielding of 4, speed of 2, why wouldn't he be drafted? Is he too good for that age, or is he really horrible?
