Has something like this ever happened, or is this totally out of the question:

HS senior 1B is tall and thin with athletic "baseball body" 6'4" 180 lbs, not well known, but receiving late-season mention in newspaper for leading a large metro area in batting average (600+). Basically has not had any exposure before this. Would the local pro scout ever decide to go and take a look at an unknown player just based on reading in the paper that he leads a densely-populated area in batting?

Sorry if this question sounds too silly and rose-tinted and all that. Probably highly unlikely ...

Your question is by no means silly--in fact the player in question may have already been seen by scouts-- they don't usually miss too many kids especially those making "noise"

Thank you for the kind response. I hope I did not over-imply any "noise" he might be making. He is not a power hitter, hit only 3 home runs this year. His only claim to fame would be the 600+ average. He has been a varsity starter since freshman year at a small HS, but has not done anything special to be noticed outside of a very small circle. He only hit about 250 as a freshman, then in the 300's as a sophmore and about 400 as a junior. He took batting lessons from a former MLB player who was a very good hitter. Finally in his senior year he seems to be hitting better each week, seeing the ball well and hitting hard line drives. He is a good IF/OF and has a good throwing arm. He was timed last year in the 60 yd by a college coach and his time was 7.0 which was supposed to be pretty good for a 6'4" guy. I'm sure it is a very long shot for a local scout to take any interest, but I was just curious to know if they would ever go to a HS game to take a look based on seeing a batting average leader listed locally who they had not heard of. It would be exciting for him just to find out that someone was interested enough to watch him. Honestly I feel kind of silly even asking about it but I appreciate your kind reply.

I just heard a story the other day about a senior that was noticed while the scouts came to watch another player. However, the question is about his pitchability and projection.
If this is your son, direct your questions to the HS coach and he can get in touch with the area scout if necessary. The scouts do read the local papers, but if the scout is not local to you, they would not see it. Depending on where you are, some scouts have larger areas than others, some have part of a state, some have to cover 2-3 states.
I have learned over the past year that anything is possilble when it comes to the draft.
