Wonder what Mike Piazza's equation was. or Keith Hernandez. or Alber Pujols. or any number of other big leaguers who didn't get drafted in top rounds. Nolan Ryan. The list is long.
Obviously a player who gets a big bonus will get more chances to fail. But you know what. A player with heart and makeup and passion and ability with some tools will get more chances to succeed!

recently my son was given a questionaire from the major league scouting bureau. How is this different than the ones he is receiving from the individual teams? Is this a good sign? Thanks for the info.

All it means is as far as I know is that the MLB respresentative is gathering information for MLB. Some team may have asked him to submit your son's name in for the draft.

If the MLSB sent you a Questionaire then that means the scout for the MLSB likes you (son) well enough to submit a follow report on him.
The 30 teams in MLB and their scouts do not dictate what the scout for the MLSB does. The MLSB is a supplement to all 30 teams. All 30 teams receive the reports from the MLSB. However, each team requires their own scout to do the necessary paperwork and to also see any player the MLSB turns in at a certain level or higher.
The MLSB works alone as if they were team 31. They then pass all the info they gather along to all 30 teams. They are an independent contractor in a business world kinda way.
The MLSB can turn the player in and not one of the 30 teams scouts will like that particular player. If that makes sense.
Each team must submit their own list of players for the draft. The MLSB list is submitted seperately from the other 30 teams.

Thank you for the info. He has been to a couple of my son's fall games and had given him the packet. Son had received some other packets from the individual teams, but none of his friends knew anything about the MLB scout who has been there. I will let him know.

Keeping a level head is good, and yes, theres a long haul ahead, but its ok to do a little " happy dad jig " when something like this happens.

Oh ok that makes more sense. HS players ARE allowed to workout at their facilities. More than once or twice is unusual.

Thats the norm now a days. With the demand for bonus money what it is. More and more scouts are having weekly workouts with the top 10 to 20 HS players in the area.
For example, over the past 6 years, A GROUP of SCOUTS get together with the better HS hitters and pitchers and do several things with them. They mingle and get to know them while shagging balls while the hitters take BP, at say a JUCO facility. Any scout can come and observe as long as you bring a few dozen balls along the 1st time you come to watch.
Its a way to get to know the player. Its a way to build some history with the player. Its a way to ask the player tough questions. Its a way to show players that pro baseball and the people who represent pro baseball is good and can be a positive.
This is happening all over the south in the east and midwest and west.
Lots of times the scouts are even working with the kids to improve them or to try to help improve efficiency.
So for scouts who live in Fl and Az that have facilities. They use them for that. For those that live else where they just use a Juco or HS field with good facilities.
The players get invited but its all volunter.
