Most people watch the draft hoping to see their son or somebody they know's son, or a HSBBWEB son's name come up.

How about college coaches? Do they watch the draft hoping their recruits don't get drafted early?

i can't really answer your question but i do have a few thoughts. I would think a college coach would be happy to see their player drafted in some ways. yea they would be losing an important player, but people and the sports director for the college/university are going to think higher of the coach and program. I mean if you saw a team had 5 guys drafted, it says something about their school as opposed to a team with none drafted. Although this all depends on the school itself and its overall program

Some coaches recruit knowing some recruits won't make it to campus. It becomes part of their programs marketing campaign.

I remember arriving to my son's first spring scrimmage in HS with dozens of scouts in attendance. They all came to see the pitcher that had committed to Clemson. I also know of some recruits who turned pro out of HS that never had made a name for themselves until they committed to Clemson, then followed that season very carefully.

Good recruiters and HC's also know who most likely will leave and who will stay after 3 years. It's their business and many do it very well.

Its college coaches vs the pro game when a kid comes outta HS. Once that player becomes a Jr. the college coach is begging you to draft the guy. In todays game, taking the HS player is a lost cause UNLESS the HS player wants to sign. Most want well into the Millions to sign. Its much easier with the college guy because he has less options and he wants to go give it a shot. So money becomes less of an issue with the college guy. So scouts spend a great deal of time at ALL their college programs more so than HS games.

Vance,
That is right. I know at son's program they work real hard at getting their juniors drafted in a good slot so they WILL leave. Sometimes you have no choice, the coaches tell you in advance, your money is spent, let's make the best of it.

Vance and TPM,
Interesting take on the subject. Certainly something I had never realized. Thanks.
