I suppose that if they are going to possibly put you in their employ they want to know if you are eligible to work in the US?
You do not have to supply it if you don't want to. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Some organizations had postcards to fill out and just drop in mail, those I put in an envelope for protection.

I think they need it if they submit your name for the draft
