I think that I once read somewhere, that if a young man was 20 years old at the time of the draft, even if he was only a sophomore at a 4 year university, but would turn 21 within 45 days after the start of the draft, he was draft eligible for that year. Could anyone tell me if this is in fact true. If it is, where can I obtain this information officially from Major League Baseball. My second question is, if the player is eligible, is he permitted to use an agent as an adviser in the way draft eligible high school seniors are permitted or does the NCAA have rules about that. 2boys-You are correct-don't know where to tell you where to verify but turning 21 before the MLB Draft or within 45 days after the draft makes a player eligible. An "advisor" can be anyone who gives advice as long as long as he/she speaks to you or player and not to the ML team. I believe no agreement for compensation can be entered into as well. I think it goes a step further than that. When our son was negotiating with the Dbacks last year, there was a form that the team included (for him to sign) which identified our son's advisor as his representative for negotiations with the team, but which made no mention of compensation to the advisor. Our son would NOT sign it so as not to jeopardize his NCAA eligibility ... just in case he chose not to sign with the Dbacks.

Guess I've always thought you had to be 21 before the draft unless in your junior year or in Junior College. Are you sure about the 45 day after the draft thing?

PG-My son turns 21 on July 5th of 2006, after his sophomore year, we were informed by a number of teams that he was eligible for the 2006 draft.
Also, Kyle Bono of UCF was drafted after his sophomore year by the Red Sox in the eighth round of the 2004 draft and signed. His birthday is June 29th,1983 which made him 20 at the time of the draft.
Believe it or not after we were informed about the rule, I asked a number of scouts and found quite a few who were not aware of it.
